BOONE, N.C. – North Carolina A&T dropped a road baseball midweek contest against Appalachian State, 14-7, at Kidd Brewer Stadium in a non-conference contest.
"We did not pitch it at all today," said A&T coach Ben Hall. "When you give up 12 uncompetitive free bases and allow big innings, it is tough to win."
Freshman Xavier Meachem, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) preseason rookie of the year, according to D1Baseball, got the start for A&T (2-6). He went 2.0 innings, allowing one run on one hit with one strikeout.
The App State Mountaineers (6-2) broke open a scoreless game in their half of the third by putting together a six-run, four-hit frame to take a 6-0 lead. The Aggies committed an error in the inning that caused four of the six runs to cross the plate unearned.
Senior outfielder Alex Leshock paced the Mountaineers with his 2-for-4, two-RBI, one stolen-base performance. He was one of five App State batters to record an RBI. Junior outfielder Phillip Cole turned in a team-high four RBI.
As is routine in midweek games, some younger players got a chance to compete, and A&T saw a few step up. With the Mountaineers leading 6-2 in the visitor's sixth, freshman Connor Knapp laced a two-run RBI double to left center field to cut the deficit to 9-4.
Then, in the top of the seventh, freshman and reigning MEAC co-rookie of the week, Trevor Sheehan stayed hot with a two-run RBI double down the right field line to cut the deficit to two, 9-7.
"I thought we competed offensively in the middle of the game to give us a chance," said Hall. "Hitting got us within two, but the story of the night was our inability to get zeroes defensively."
Freshmen Xavier Bussey and TJ Ash were the only two Aggies to have multi-hit games.
App responded with a four-run home-half of the seventh to take the lead back to six, 13-7. They added another run in the eighth.
"We'll get back to work tomorrow to prepare for a tough weekend in Charleston," said Hall.
The Aggies will travel to Charleston, S.C. this weekend to take on The Citadel in a three-game road series, March 5-7.
