Baseball Loses Tough One-Run Game at App State

The Aggies lost both games of the doubleheader.

BOONE, N.C. – North Carolina A&T dropped both games of a Saturday baseball doubleheader, 6-2 and 7-6, against the Appalachian State Mountaineers at Kidd Brewer Stadium in non-conference baseball action.

In the second game, the Aggies (1-5) jumped on the Mountaineers (5-1) early, plating three runs in the top of the first inning courtesy of a three-run bomb from freshman third baseman Trevor Sheehan. The Aggies saw their lead balloon to five after junior infielder Justin Williams homered in the top of the fourth, followed by a sacrifice bunt by freshman infielder Alex Reyna that brought home redshirt sophomore infielder Grant Tilley

App State responded in the home half of the fourth with five runs of their own and then took the lead in the bottom of the sixth with two more runs to make it 7-5. N.C. A&T got a run back after Sheehan's RBI double to center field in the top of the eighth, but N.C. A&T couldn't get that extra run to tie the game.

Sheehan finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBI.

On the other side, App State was led by all-conference second baseman Luke Drumheller's 2-for-3 performance that included a double and three RBI.

Senior right-hander and reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) pitcher of the week Michael Johnson got the ball for the Aggies in Game 1 but gave up a run in each of the first four innings.

His final line was 3.1 innings pitched with four runs surrendered (three earned) on eight hits with one strikeout.

The Aggies got two runs back in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer from junior outfielder Justin Rodriguez, but that was all the scoring for A&T. App State plated two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to compile their six runs.

The Aggies welcome App State to War Memorial Stadium tomorrow, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m. for their 2021 home opener.
