N.C. A&T Schedules Hornets For A Non-Conference Tilt

N.C. A&T added the Hornets to the schedule last Tuesday.

D'Mya Tucker leads the MEAC in shooting (54.2 percent).

AGGIES OVERVIEW: On Tuesday, North Carolina A&T women's basketball added a non-conference road game at Delaware State. The Aggies went 2-0 last weekend by defeating Norfolk State 60-47 on Saturday and 49-32 on Sunday in Corbett Sports Center.  

N.C. A&T is on a six-game winning streak. In the one game they lost, UNC Greensboro had to rally to win. Four Aggies are averaging double-figures, led by senior Deja Winters (13.0 ppg), who is the only one of the four coming off the bench. Winters ranks sixth in the conference in scoring, fourth in field goal percentage (44.2), second in 3-point shooting (41.7), and she leads the conference in 3-pointers made per game (2.9).

Graduate guard Chanin Scott leads the MEAC with 9.5 rebounds per game. She has 22 rebounds in her last two games, including her first double-double as an Aggie on Jan. 16, with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Norfolk. Freshman D'Mya Tucker leads the MEAC in shooting at 54.2 percent, while her freshman counterpart Sean Kelly Darks is third in steals per game (2.1).

Aggie alum Tarrell Robinson leads A&T. Robinson is in his eighth season as head coach. He enters today's game with a 167-90 (.650) record and has the best winning percentage in school history. He is 25 wins shy of becoming the school's all-time leader in wins, and he has posted an impressive 94-28 (.770) record against MEAC opponents without ever having a losing season in league play. Under Robinson, the Aggies have five 20-win seasons, two MEAC tournament titles, three regular-season titles and five postseason appearances.  

DELAWARE STATE OVERVIEW:  Delaware State is on a three-game losing streak, with their last win against Coppin State, 60-45, on Jan. 5. Sha Collins leads the Hornets by averaging 10.0 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. Sharajah Collins is second on the team in scoring at 8.7 pointers game, and she is averaging 3.3 rebounds per game. 

Delaware State's program is led by David Caputo, who is in his third season with the Hornets. He enters today's game 21-45 overall as the head man at DSU. Caputo had an impressive stint as the head coach of NCAA Division II Bloomfield College in New Jersey. He compiled an 82-36 (.729) record, including a 65-11 (.855) in conference play, three regular-season conference championships and two NCAA tournament appearances. 

THE SERIES: The Aggies hold a 39-34 lead over the Hornets, but DSU has a 19-15 lead in Dover.

MEAC WEEKLY AWARDS:  The Aggies received another MEAC weekly award Tuesday as Scott earned player of the week for the second consecutive week.

Scott averaged 11.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.0 blocks and 0.5 steals in two wins against Norfolk State. She recorded her first double-double as an Aggie with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the first game against NSU and recorded 12 rebounds, six points and four assists the following day. 

Scott's award is the seventh MEAC weekly award this season for the Aggies. Five different Aggies have received a weekly award starting on Dec. 15 when senior Jayla-Jones Pack secured defensive player of the week. 

Winters followed with a player of the week honor on Dec. 22 and a co-player of the week award on Jan. 5. Also, on Jan. 5, Tucker earned defensive player of the week. Jan. 12 saw Scott named co-player of the week and Darks named rookie of the week. 

YOUNG TEAM:  The Aggies have one of the youngest teams in the country. N.C. A&T's average is 19.5 years old. They are tied for the sixth-youngest team in the country with UNLV. Only Oral Roberts, LaSalle, Incarnate Word and Montana State are younger. N.C. A&T has 10 players 19 or younger, and the Aggies feature seven true freshmen. That is tied for the fourth-most in the country.
