LONGWOOD, Fla. – North Carolina A&T softball completed its second comeback of the Spring Games at Boombah Soldiers Field Saturday with a 10-4 win over Valparaiso.
The Aggies won despite falling behind 3-0 after the fourth inning.
The Aggies also trailed Detroit Mercy 6-1 after the fifth inning in the first game of the tournament and came back with five runs to force extra innings before winning the game in eight innings.
"The three runs that they had, we opened the door for," N.C. A&T coach
Patti Raduenz. "We have to make them earn it. But we made the adjustments. We had a big inning and had a couple of players earning a walk and getting on by a hit-by-pitch. I'm proud of their performance."
The Aggies were led by junior second baseman
Stephanie Williams going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored in the leadoff spot. Freshman right fielder
Latianna Langley went 2-for-5 with a run scored and sophomore first baseman
Vivica Boyd went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Junior
Bayleigh Kirby (2-6) pitched a complete game giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts. "She's been working hard to overcome adversity," Raduenz said on Kirby. "To see her to start to have that success that we know she can have, I'm super excited for her."
Valpo (8-9) scored a run in the second inning after an inside-the-park home run for a 2-0 lead. They scored a run in the third after an infield single and an errant throw to first allowed Valpo to take a 3-0 advantage.
The Aggies captured their first lead of the game in the fifth inning after scoring six runs. Freshman center fielder
Moriah Terry started the inning with a walk and sophomore left fielder
Tivonia Cole followed with a walk.
Williams singled to drive home Terry from second base and runners moved to second and third on the throw home. Langley hit a ball to the shortstop. A diving Jaina Westphal could not come up with the groundball allowing for a Langley double as drove home Williams to cut the Valpo lead to 3-2.
Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Cole and advance Langley to third. A wild throw from the right field allowed Langley to score to give the Aggies a 4-3 lead. Valpo changed pitchers and junior designated player
Hailee Cutts singled to right field.
Sophomore
Cinsear Saunders pinch ran for Cutts and stole second. Boyd then hit a two-out double to left center to drive home Saunders for a 5-3 lead. Sophomore third baseman
Desttany Parker was hit-by-a-pitch and pinch hitter
Jocelyn Bennett singled to right to drive home Boyd for a 6-3 lead.
The Aggies scored four more runs in the seventh inning to take a 10-3 lead. Saunders started the inning with a hit-by-pitch. She advanced to second on a wild pitch. Runners were put on first and second when Boyd walked.
After Valpo switched pitchers again the Aggies executed a double steal. Saunders scored on an errant throw to take a 7-3 lead. Parker hit an RBI single to bring home Boyd. Parker advanced to second on the throw home for an 8-3 lead.
An RBI triple from Terry brought home Parker. Williams then hit a two-out RBI single to center to drive home Terry for a 10-3 lead. Langley did get an infield single, but Williams was thrown out between second and third for the final out of the inning.
Valparaiso scored a run in the bottom half of the seventh inning on a home run to left field to close out the scoring. Valpo was led by Lauren Kehlenbrink going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Easton Seib (3-2) picked up the loss pitching the first 4.1 innings giving up four runs on four hits.
The Aggies finish the tournament with Charleston Southern at 9 a.m. and Long Island at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
