Sturgis, Wilkerson claim victory at two different meets

Aaron Wilkerson wins the men's shot put at the Camel City Invitational.

Cambrea Sturgis won the women's 200 meters at the South Carolina Invitational.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C/COLUMBIA, S.C. – Once again, the North Carolina A&T indoor track and field teams were spread out across the Carolinas over the weekend as a few Aggies competed at the Camel City Invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Friday and Saturday.

Others traveled back to Columbia, S.C., to compete in the South Carolina Invitational at the University of South Carolina (USC). It marked the third time this season the Aggies have competed at USC.

The Aggies had one victory and seven top-5 finishes including three second-place finishes at USC.

At JDL, the Aggies showed strength in the throws. They one victory and five top-5 finishes in Winston-Salem.

Sophomore Cambrea Sturgis took first place in the women's 200 meters on Saturday by running a 23.06. It is an indoor personal record for her and places her fourth in the nation in the event.

Fellow sophomore Kamaya Debose-Epps finished fourth in 23.53. It was also Debose-Epps personal record in the 200. She is now ranked third in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and 21st in the nation in the 200m.

In the men's 200 at USC, senior Akeem Sirleaf finished second in 21.03. Sirleaf's 20.97 last week at Texas Tech still holds strong as the second-fastest time in the MEAC and the 14th-best in the nation.

Seven Aggies competed in the men's 200m at USC. Four finished in the top-10 including freshman Randolph Ross who completed the race in 21.04. That is the third-fastest time in the MEAC and ranked 21st in the country. Senior Elijah Young finished eighth in 21.44 and senior Trevor Stewart finished ninth in 21.45.

Over in the field events at USC, sophomore Brandon Hicklin placed second in the men's long jump with his best jumped measured at 24-feet, 4 ½-inches. Hicklin's 24-foot, 7 ¾-inch jump at the Gamecock opener on Jan. 17 still has him ranked No. 1 in the conference in the long jump.

In the women's high jump, freshman Kenady Wilson finished tied for second with a jump of 5-feet, 7-inches. Wilson's jump ranks her second in the MEAC behind teammate Reide Ryans (5-feet, 7 ¾-inches).

In Winston-Salem, junior Aaron Wilkerson had the lone win for the Aggies. Wilkerson placed first in the men's shot put with his best toss landing at 54-feet, 9 ¼-inches. Wilkerson is ranked No. 1 in the MEAC in the men's shot put after his 55-foot, 2-inch throw at the JDL College Kickoff in December. Sophomore teammate Obie Taylor finished fourth in the men's shot put at 54-feet, 1-inch. Taylor's performance moves him into the No. 2 ranking in the conference.

Wilkerson also competed in the men's weight throw at the Camel City Invite where he placed fifth with a throw of 59-feet, ¼-inches. Wilkerson's weight-throw performance moves him into first place in the conference ahead of Maryland Eastern Shore's Tamunoibi Dabipi.

On the women's side, junior Loren James had two top-5 finishes. She finished third and first among collegiate participants in the women's shot put with a throw of 46-feet, 5 ¼-inches. James is the top shot putter in the conference after she recorded a throw of 48-feet, 6 ¾-inches at the Carolina Challenge on Jan. 31.

James was fifth in the women's weight throw at JDL with a throw of 56-feet, 3 ¾-inches. Sophomore Jasmine Jenkins finished seventh as her best throw was measured at 53-feet, 11 ¼-inches. James' throw on Saturday has her fifth in the MEAC while Jenkins' 54-foot, 6-inch throw at the JDL College Kickoff has her seventh.

Next week, the Aggies will spread out again. A portion of the team will head to Lynchburg, Va., to participate in Liberty University's Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational. Others will head to the University of Arkansas for the annual Tyson Invitational.
