WINSTON-SALEM, N.C./COLUMBIA, S.C. – North Carolina A&T indoor track and field had a few athletes get a final tune-up before the 2020 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships, Feb. 27-29, at the Prince George's County Sports Learning Center in Landover, Md.
A few Aggies competed at the JDL DMR Invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Saturday. Some Aggies competed at the USC Open at the University of South Carolina's South Carolina Indoor Track and Field Complex.
The Aggies came away with one victory at the JDL Fast Track. Sophomore hurdler
Cedric McGriff won the men's 60-meter hurdles in 7.93 after posting the fastest qualifying in 8.05. Senior
Robert Miller also qualified for the final with a time of 8.18 but he did not finish the final.
McGriff already had the top time in the MEAC at 7.82 recorded at the Jim Green Invitational at the University of Kentucky. McGriff's toughest competition at the MEAC indoor meet appears to be Coppin State's Aaron Lewis whose top time is 7.88.
Also at JDL, senior Abbas Abbkar finished second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:50.31. Abbkar enters the MEAC meet with the best time in the conference followed by two Aggies in senior
Mar'Quise McGee (1:51.02) and sophomore
Regan Kimtai (1:51.05).
In South Carolina, the Aggies had two second-place finishes. Senior
Trevor Stewart finished second in the men's 400 meters. Stewart ran a 46.66 to finish behind South Carolina's Quincy Hall who ran a 45.99.
Stewart will come into the MEAC indoor championships ranked second in the conference in the 400m behind freshman teammate
Randolph Ross. Ross has the best time in the world at 45.55 followed by Stewart who posted a 46.54 at the Texas Tech Invitational on Jan. 30.
Senior
Akeem Sirleaf also had a second-place finish as he ran the 200m in 21.20 to finish behind South Carolina's Evan Miller. Sirleaf is third in the conference in the 200m with a time of 20.93.
Both the N.C. A&T men's and women's track and field indoor teams will be going after their fourth straight MEAC title in Landover, Md.
