Men's Tennis Travels to The Queen City

N.C. A&T prepares to take on the 49ers.

Jorge Goenaga and the men's tennis team faces Charlotte on Saturday at 5 p.m.
EAST GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T men's tennis team is slated to take on the Charlotte 49ers in the Queen City this Saturday, Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. Last time these two teams met, Charlotte won 7-0 on Feb. 7, 2015. The next day, the Aggies will face the Liberty Flames at 5 p.m., in Lynchburg, Va.

N.C. A&T (0-1) suffered a loss in their first match of the spring season at the hands of Duke, 6-1. The Blue Devils, one of the best teams in the country, earned the doubles point after defeating the Aggies in two of the three scheduled matchups. N.C. A&T's Nolan Martino was able to pick up the lone point for the Aggies when he defeated Duke's Samir Agadi 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 in No. 6 singles.

The 49ers (1-2) are coming off a 4-3 loss to Boston College on Jan. 17. Charlotte is led by sophomore Henry Lieberman who is 3-0 this year playing primarily No. 3 singles. He did, however, move up to No. 2 against Boston College and earned a 6-1, 6-2 point for Charlotte. Lieberman was named Conference USA (C-USA) player of the week on Wednesday. First-year coach Kyle Bailey came over from South Carolina last September where he was the associate head coach for the Gamecocks.

The match will be played at Lifetime Fitness, the Onyx Premier Club in Charlotte. The Aggies will be the second match of the day for Charlotte as the Niners will also take on South Carolina State at 12:30 p.m.

The Flames, fresh off a 7-0 loss to the Miami Hurricanes last weekend, are 16-0 all-time against the Aggies. They beat the Aggies 7-0 in February 2019. Liberty is led by junior Nicaise Muamba, who was the 65th-ranked player in the country at the beginning of the fall season. He, as well as sophomore Ian Sturgill, has 12 singles victories so far this year. As members of the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN), the Flames were projected to finish second in the Preseason Poll.

The match will be played at Liberty's Crosswhite Athletic Club. The Aggies will be the second match of the day for Liberty as the Flames are slated to play Gardner-Webb at noon.
