Box Score WINSTON-SALEM – Senior forward
Ronald Jackson recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds, but North Carolina A&T's upset bid against Wake Forest fell short, 76-64, Saturday afternoon in LJVM coliseum.
N.C. A&T (3-10) came into the game 0-5 against Wake Forest and had lost by an average of 28 points in those games. But with three minutes into the second half, sophomore
Tyrone Lyons hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 44. A minute later junior
Kameron Langley hit a free throw to give the Aggies the lead. N.C. A&T and Wake traded the lead six times over the next seven minutes.
The Aggies went on a 7-2 run over 2:06 to tie the game at 59 as senior guard
Andre Jackson hit a 3-pointer with 7:42 to play. The Demon Deacons retook the lead on a Chaundee Brown layup before a
Fred Cleveland, Jr. steal and fastbreak layup tied the game again with 6:22 to play. The Deacs (7-5) took the lead for good on an Isaiah Mucius jumper to make it 63-61.
Wake grew their lead to 66-61 with 4:14 to play, but Cleveland, the reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rookie of the week, netted a 3-pointer to get the Aggies to within two. Unfortunately, it would be the Aggies' final points of the game. Wake scored the final 10 points over the next four minutes to secure the win.
"I thought our guys competed for 40 minutes," said N.C. A&T coach
Jay Joyner. "The game got away from us late. We didn't capitalize on a couple possessions and when that happens, unfortunately, the game can slip away from you."
Cleveland scored 15 points on 4-for-7 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. He has scored in double-figures four straight games. Langley added six points and seven assists.
N.C. A&T jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead with 18:53 remaining in the first half. Wake responded with an 8-2 run to claim an 8-5 advantage. With under eight minutes left, Cleveland swiped a steal and nailed a fastbreak 3-pointer to give the Aggies a 25-24 lead. The Deacs, who led for 15:49 in the first half, stormed back and took a 41-34 lead into the locker room.
Lyons scored eight of his 10 points in the second half. The Aggies have a few days off for the holiday before jumping back on the road to take on Power 5 opponent Illinois on Dec. 29
