GREENSBORO (April 1, 2017) – The North Carolina A&T women's tennis team fell to 5-11 on the season after a 7-0 loss on Saturday against the Pirates of East Carolina University.
N.C. A&T lost all six singles matches and two doubles matches with the third doubles match not completed. ECU captured the doubles points as Celia Ruiz and Lisa Hofbauer beat Shelya Ramirez and Angelica Martinez in the No. 1 doubles match, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Khaliah Powell and Nadia Hilton-Adams were defeated by Maria Gomez and Nastja Rettich.
The Aggies managed one set victory during the singles competition from freshman Klara Smolikova before she ultimately lost to ECU senior Michelle Castro 6-3, 3-6 (6-10) at No.4 singles. Sophomore Fabiana Ramirez fought hard at No. 1; after losing the first set 6-4, she battled again during the second before eventually losing 6-3 to East Carolina's Celia Ruiz who is ranked No. 124. At No. 6 singles, Aggie freshman Kanishka Chawla also contended for the match but could not close either set and lost both 6-3 to Maria Gomez. Junior Khalia Powell lost 6-0, 6-3 to ECU's Lisa Hofbauer at No. 2 singles while Sophomore Angelica Martinez lost 6-3,6-1 to Annija Veinsteina at No. 3 singles. Rounding out the singles play for the Aggies at No.5, junior Nadia Hilton-Adams fell 6-0, 6-2 to Nastja Rettich.
N.C. A&T stays at home for their next two matches as they host conference foes Bethune-Cookman on Friday April 7 and Florida A&M on Saturday April 8. Both matches will be played at Aggie Tennis Complex and both start at noon.
