GREENSBORO – Despite getting out to a quick a start, and even leading by as many as eight points in the first quarter, the N.C. A&T women's basketball team couldn't overcome a 42.6 percent shooting performance by VCU, as they fell 64-49 to the Rams in Corbett Sports Center Wednesday afternoon.
The Aggies dropped to 4-8 while the Rams improved to 11-2.
With the Aggies leading 12-4 midway through the first quarter, a flurry of 3-pointers late in the period by the Rams would leave the teams all knotted at 16 going into the second. VCU would outscore N.C. A&T 11-8 in the second quarter, leaving the Aggies with a manageable 24-27 deficit at the half.
However, the Rams jumped out early in the second half, rattling off eight quick unanswered points and widening their lead by 11, a margin the Aggies wouldn't overcome. VCU's Isis Thorpe saw 10 of her game-high 16 points come in the second half, including going 4-for-6 from 3-point range for the day. The Rams were also lead by Keira Robinson with 15 points.
"I thought we got out to a good start and I knew we would," said head coach Tarrell Robinson. "I thought we jumped on them but they're a good team, they play hard and they compete."
It was a tough rebounding night for N.C. A&T as the Rams out-rebounded the Aggies 49-24, including 18 offensive rebounds and 17 second chance points. Senior guard Christina Carter led N.C A&T with 15 points. Center Aprill McRae also finished in double figures with 10 points.
"That's been one of the things we've been inconsistent with," said Robinson. "How we compete, how we get after it and whether or not we raise our level of competition to the level of the teams we are playing against. But being able to be in the game the entire game, even though we let it get away in the end, is something that we can build on."
The Aggies will further the building process Saturday, Jan. 2 when they play their first game of the New Year against Pfeiffer at Corbett Sports Center at 2 p.m.
