CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The North Carolina A&T men's basketball team faced yet another second half slump which caused it to fall 62-55 to Radford in the Corpus Christi Coastal Classic, Friday afternoon at the American Bank Center.
The Aggies (1-5 overall) were led by freshman Austin Williams and sophomore Khary Doby who finished with 14 points each. Williams recorded 12 first half points and also registered a team-high eight rebounds along with four steals and three assists. Doby came off the bench and shot 6-for-6 from the field, added six rebounds, two assists, and a pair of blocks.
Junior Bruce Beckford tallied 13 points against the Highlanders (3-3) and also finished with five rebounds.
After A&T found its rhythm in the first half it found itself tied at 27 following a jumper from Doby with 4:51 remaining. A layup from freshman James Whitaker put the Aggies up 29-27 but RJ Pierce nailed a 3-pointer to give Radford the lead with under three minutes remaining. The Aggies retaliated with a 3-pointer by Williams with only two seconds left to tie the game at 34 heading into halftime.
The Aggies had a hard time defending the Highlanders' 3-point attack in the first half where they shot 50.0 percent (6-for-12).
The Highlanders answered first in the second half but it didn't take the Aggies long to regain the lead after Beckford hit a jump shot to give them to 42-39 edge at the 15:09 mark. Radford recovered the lead for good with a dunk by Brandon Holcomb and layup from Javonte Green just moments later.
A layup from Whitaker with 8:32 remaining cut Radford's advantage to 53-51 but the Highlanders rallied on a 12-6 run to close out the game.
Pierce and Green recorded 14 points each for Radford followed by Rashaun Davis who added 10. Holcomb finished with a game-high nine rebounds.
A&T will face the loser of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi/Mississippi Valley State game on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
