BLACKSBURG/NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A day after the men had some
spectacular performances, it was the women's turn as the North Carolina A&T
men's and women's indoor track and field teams returned to action on Saturday.
There were Aggies in two different locations in Virginia on
Saturday. The majority of the team completed the second day of the Virginia
Tech Invitational, while female track and field athletes Tiffany Ellick and
Francesca Evans competed in the Pentathlon at the Christopher Newport Captain's
Invitational at the Freeman Center in Newport News, Va.
"We had a few good performances over the weekend," said
Duane Ross, the Aggies director of track and field programs. "We still have some
work to do in building a balanced program. I believe this weekend revealed who
we are and what is needed to take this program to the next level."
During the first day of the VT Invite, the Aggies saw male
sprinter Darryl Williams and female sprinter Jessica Farr earned personal best
in 60 meter races. Farr ran a 7.73 in the women's 60 meter preliminary, while
Williams posted a 6.83 in the 60 meter finals. Jeffrey Lewis broke the school
record in the men's 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.13, and senior Kristin
Rush's 3:02.82 time in the 1000 meters was a new school mark.
Also on Friday, the men recorded five top-5 finishes. On
Saturday, the women two top-5 finishes, including a third-place finish in the
200 meters by Farr and a third-place showing in the shot put by redshirt junior
Sydni Cobb. Farr completed the 200 in 24.39, and she placed sixth in the women's
400 with a 56.87 time. Cobb's best throw in the shot put went 43-feet, 11 ¼ inches.
The men also continued to have a busy day at Virginia Tech's
Rector Fieldhouse. The top two individual performances came from sophomore
distance runner Christian Harrison and sophomore thrower Demetrius Green. Harrison
both placed fourth as Harrison ran the men's 800 in 1:57.27, and Green had his
best shot put throw go 47-feet, 5 ¾ inches.
The team of Ashanti Foster-Felder, Keenan Smith, Torrance
Womack and Paris Simmons finished fifth in the men's 4x400 meter relay with a
time of 3:16.92.
Four hours up the road, Ellick and Evans were competing in
multiple events at CNU. Ellick and Evans competed in five different events with
Ellick finishing the 60 meters in 9.08 for a first-place finish. That
first-place finish and fourth-place finish in the shot put helped Ellick with
2,748 points for seventh place. Evans had 2,673 points for 11th.
The Aggies return to action Jan. 25-26 when they travel to
Penn State to participate in the Penn State National Indoor Invitational.
