TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Junior Xavier Macklin hit a three-run home run and senior Nick Oelker struck out seven over seven innings to lead the North Carolina A&T baseball team to a 6-2 win over Florida A&M in the second game of a doubleheader played Saturday at Moore-Kittles Field. The Aggies lost the first game 7-6 on a sacrifice fly.
Macklin's homer in the first inning of Game 2 gave him 35 for his career after he homered in the first game as well. It was set up by a Marquis Riley single and an error by left fielder Tobi Adeyemi that allowed Dairio Little to reach. Macklin's eighth homer of the year gave the Aggies a 3-0 lead.
Their lead grew on a Little sacrifice fly in the third as Andre McKoy scored. On the same play, Rattlers second baseman threw the ball away, allowing Riley to score for a 5-0 lead.
Oelker had all the support he needed from there. A double led to a Rattler RBI single in the third, and a triple led to another RBI single in the fifth. But Oelker (3-2) was tough to hit for most of the game. He struck out David Duncan to end the sixth, and he struck out Adeyemi to end the game in the seventh.
McKoy and Riley had two hits apiece. Jose Linton took the loss for the Rattlers.
In the first game, Luke Tendler, Riley and Macklin had two hits apiece. Little gave the Aggies a 3-2 lead with a two-run RBI single to left field to score McKoy and Carvell Copeland. Macklin followed with a two-run home run to left field. But the Rattlers rallied.
They scored two runs in the seventh to cut the Aggies lead to 6-5. In the eighth, Osca Santalo doubled with one out. Justin Abney followed with a double to score Kilpatrick, the pinch runner. On the same play, Abney was able to advance to third on the throw to the plate.
His move to third was big as David Duncan flew out to center field to score the winning run on the sacrifice fly. Paulino (2-3) took the loss. The Aggies are 8-17 overall and 2-2 in the MEAC. The Rattlers moved to 9-22 and 1-4 in the MEAC. The two teams are back in action Sunday at 1.
