Aggies Endure Rough Night in Orangeburg

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - S.C. State snapped a seven-game losing streak to North Carolina A&T with a 71-57 win over the Aggies at the S-H-M Memorial Center Saturday night. The Bulldogs held Aggies standout center Thomas Coleman to a season-low two points and two rebounds. Coleman only had one shot attempt from the field.

"We were flat top to bottom," said N.C . A&T head coach Jerry Eaves. "It was just difficult. When Thomas Coleman only scores two points after the year he has been having, you know we just didn't have it tonight."

The Bulldogs opened the game on an 11-0 run. It put the Aggies in a position where they had to play from behind the rest of the night. They got to within five at 33-28 at halftime. But N.C. A&T's second-half start was just as bad as their first-half start.

S.C. State (7-19, 3-10) opened the final 20 minutes of the game with a 14-3 start to take a 47-31 lead. The Aggies never got any closer than 12 points. Darnell Porter led the charge with two 3-pointers during the run. He led the Bulldogs with 23 points on 5-for-11 shooting from 3-point range. The performance of Porter and the Bulldogs led Eaves to empty his bench in an effort to find a five that could match the Bulldogs' energy.

"We're just a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get," said Eaves. "Some games we don't show our immaturity, and we play great. And then we have nights when we show that we have a team full of sophomores and freshmen. We were 15-for-30 from the line and we missed a ton of front ends. When you don't hit your free throws, it's a sign of immaturity."

Marc Hill led the Aggies (12-15, 7-6) with 20 points. N.C. A&T travels to Durham to face archrival N.C. Central Monday night in a non-conference game.
