Breaking
it down: Campbell dominated the glass in a 94-66 win over the
North Carolina A&T men's basketball team Thursday night at the Pope
Center/Gore Arena. Two Camels recorded double-doubles led by Darren White who
finished with 33 points and 11 rebounds.
Eric Griffin added 24 points and 13 boards as the Camels
outrebounded the Aggies50-20. As a result, Campbell had a 30-10 edge in second
chance points. Griffin also had five blocks.
The Campbell blowout was subtle. DaMetrius Upchurch's
baseline dunk with 16:34 remaining in the game cut the Camels lead to one at
50-49. Camel went on a 9-2 run over the next five minutes, but Marc Hill's
3-pointer kept the Aggies close at 59-54.
Over the next six minutes, the Camels outscored N.C.
A&T 25-4 to take an 84-58 lead with 5:23 to play.
"I'm disappointed because we played so well for 30
minutes," said N.C. A&T head coach Jerry Eaves. "We just have to fix the
last 10 because I truly thought we were going to win the game at the 10-minute
mark. I've never seen a team take such a slide so quickly."
Nic Simpson led the Aggies with 17 points on 3-for-9
shooting from 3-point range.
The
keys to the Aggies loss:
-
North Carolina A&T was hurt by not
grasping the basketball. Almost every loose ball opportunity ended up in the
hands of a Campbell player. The Camels used those loose ball chances to get out
in the open floor to score 16 fastbreak points.
-
Eaves is confidence the Aggies will fix their
rebounding woes. So far this season they have been outrebounded 153-86.
-
The Aggies had trouble with Camels' zone
defense, and shot 34 percent from the floor. Eaves said the focus during the
preseason has been on attacking the man-to-man. As the season progresses, the
Aggies will have a better command on beating the zone, he added.
-
Austin Witter sat out his second straight
game with an injury.
-
The Camels had three made 3-pointers over its
first two games of the season. They hit eight on Thursday.
Standout
Performance: Nic Simpson hit all eight of his free throws
and is now shooting 92 percent on the season.
Unsung:
Head coach Jerry Eaves is looking to settle
his rotation. Juniors R.J. Buck and Jean Louisme look to be in the mix as reserves.
Louisme finished with 10, including a 2-for-5 night from 3-point range, and
Buck made three impressive slashes to the basket to end the game with nine.
What
did he say?: "We have a young team with a lot of talent.
We just have to get everybody healthy and in condition. We just didn't attack
the basket, and we weren't looking inside to attack the basket. When we did, I
know we missed at least 10 layups."
The
next opponent: The
Aggies play their home opener Saturday night at Corbett Sports Center against
Chicago State at 7. The game will follow the Aggies' home football game against
N.C. Central at 1:30 p.m.
