North Carolina A&T kept up its momentum heading into the MEAC
Women's
Tennis Tournament with a 7-0 win over Savannah State Saturday
afternoon
at the Aggie Tennis Complex.
Four Aggies won their respective matches 6-0, 6-0, including two
freshmen – Nianna Henry and Chole McSwain.
“It's real important to the young ladies that we go into the
tournament
on a winning streak,'' said head coach James Dunwoody. “I think we're
playing like a team looking forward to postseason play. We're really
excited about what we could accomplish.”
The Aggies have played three straight home matches and have one more
on
Sunday before facing Howard in Raleigh on April 16. On Saturday, the
Tigers only scored two points during singles competition. Winnie Quick,
Azeib Nigatu, Nianna Henry and McSwain won 6-0, 6-0.
Nigatu won her team-leading sixth match of the season. No. 1 singles
player Jaymee Jones defeated Lauren Daniels 6-1, 6-0 while Cayla Cross
defeated Shawannda McClain 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 3 singles position. The
Aggies took the doubles point by winning all three matches.
Nina and Nianna Henry won their No. 3 doubles matches 8-0. The Henry
sisters won their fifth match of the season, which leads the team. The
Aggies will open the MEAC Tournament against Howard. Howard is 12-3
overall and 5-0 in the MEAC.
