GREENSBORO – After not playing well at River Run Collegiate, hosted by Davidson two weeks ago, Division I transfer and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University junior men's golfer
Jordan Williams used the chance to play as an individual at this week's Ironwood Collegiate Classic, hosted by East Carolina University, to gather himself and get his game in order.
It worked. Williams played three excellent rounds at the par-72, 7,120-yard Ironwood Golf Course in Greenville, NC, on Monday and Tuesday. As a result, the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) named Williams its men's golfer of the week, the program's first weekly honor of the season.
Williams finished tied for 10
th place, shooting a two-day, three-round 72-72-68 – 4-under 212. As an individual, Williams's performance did not count toward the Aggies' totals this week, but it did count toward his confidence. He shot even par in each of the first two rounds on Monday. He opened Monday's play with a birdie and added birdies on the 397-yard par-4 first and the 451-yard 10
th. Williams added birdies on two additional par-4s, including the 413-yard 12
th and the 434-yard 15
th. His Round 2 also opened with a birdie on 16 before he made birdies on par 5s, including the 512-yard fifth and the 574-yard 13
th.
On Tuesday, Williams had a career day. He posted the day's low for the Aggies, shooting a 4-under 68. He started Tuesday's round on the 13
th with a par before blazing through the rest of the back nine. He birdied three of those five holes before making the turn and sinking a birdie putt on the 426-yard par-4 fifth and the 416-yard par-4 sixth. He finished with six straight par putts.
It was the opposite of what happened at Davidson weeks ago, when he shot 74-73-83 – 230. Williams and the Aggies return to action Oct. 17-18 when they play in the SAS HBCU Invitational at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, NC.
