GREENSBORO – The North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University men's golf team completed their season-opening tournament on Sunday in a tie for sixth place with the Davidson Wildcats at the Bryan Collegiate, hosted by neighbor UNC Greensboro at the par-72, 7,101-yard Bryan Park golf course.

The Aggies shot a two-day, three-round 2-over 292-286-288—866. Over the final two rounds, the Aggies shot 2-under. UNCG won the tournament at 26-under 838, followed by the Radford Highlanders at 857. William & Mary and Georgetown finished in a third-place tie at 860.

A&T finished one stroke shy of the top five as IU Indy placed fifth at 865. Junior Pedro Pereria led the Aggies, earning a top-10 finish for the fifth time in his career. Pereria shot 2-under 71-70-73—214 to finish in a three-way tie for 10^th place. Senior teammate Camilo Marin had the second-lowest score for the Aggies.

Marin shot 1-under 74-72-69—215 to finish in a tie for 14^th place. Radford's David Goode took medalist honors with a 13-under 203. Davidson's Griffin Cheatwood, UNCG's BJ Boyce, and Georgetown's Carson Erick finished in a three-way tie for second at 10-under 206. UNCG's Kelvin Hernandez rounded out the top 5 at 9-under 207.

Pereia started the tournament on Saturday with a par on the 305-yard, par-4 10^th. He birdied the 543-yard, par-5 11^th before eight straight pars, but a bogey on the par-4 second ended the streak. Pereria returned to par on the par-5 third before carding a two on the par-3, 137-yard fourth.

He closed the first round with five straight pars to finish with a 71. In the second round, Pereria moved to 1-under after a birdie on the par-4, 472-yard 18th. He stayed there until a bogey on the par-4, fifth,
then added two birdies to finish with a 70.

His additional second-round birdies came on the par-5, 536-yard sixth and the par-4, 410-yard eighth. His final round was his only round over par. Pereria started round three on the par-3, 175-yard seventh, bogeyed the 10^th and 12^th, then birdied the par-4, 472-yard 13th for his sixth birdie of the tournament.

Pereria also birdied the par-4, 416-yard 16^th to move to even par for the round. He then had trouble on the first and second, but birdied his final hole of the tournament, making No. 6 for the second straight day to finish 1-over. Meanwhile, Marin had an excellent final round.

He started on the par-5 with a birdie, then added birdies on the seventh, the par-4, 436-yard ninth and No. 11. A bogey on 14 moved him back to 4-under, but five straight pars and a birdie on the 463-yard, par-4 second put him back to 5-under.

An unfortunate double-bogey on No. 4 left Marin with a 69. His first round included five bogeys and birdies on six, seven and 14. In the second round, he opened with birdies on 10 and 11, made par on the par-3, 205-yard 12th, added a birdie on 13, and two bogeys left him at 1-under 35 on the back nine.

His second-round front nine included two bogeys and a birdie on the par-5, 519-yard third. Marin posted a 37 on the front nine to finish the second round at even par. The Aggies had three other golfers compete on the team, and two others competed as individuals. Junior Javier Morgado finished in a five-way tie for 25^th with a 1-over 71-71-75 – 217, including 15 birdies for the tournament.

Junior Jordan Williams finished in a four-way tie for 49^th at 6-over 77-73-72—222. Junior Ignacio Zapata finished at 11-over 76-77-74—227. Junior Mauricio Alvarado and sophomore Emilio Hernandez both shot three-round 221s. The Aggies return to action on Monday, Sept. 21, when they travel to Davidson, NC, to participate in the River Run Collegiate, hosted by Davidson.
