BUIES CREEK, NC – Campbell pulled away late against the North Carolina A&T Aggies to complete a three-game Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) baseball sweep on Sunday, beating A&T 8-2 at Jim Perry Stadium.
Seniors
Andrew Tinsley and
Nick DiCarlo recorded the Aggies' only two extra-base hits of the series when Tinsley homered and DiCarlo doubled on Sunday. Despite that, the Aggies saw their overall record move to 12-34 and their CAA record to 3-21. By completing the sweep, the Fighting Camels continued to put a stronghold on first place in the CAA South Division, winning their eighth straight to improve to 33-14 overall and 23-4 in the league.
Graduate right-handed pitcher
Angel Ortiz (L, 0-4) started for A&T and quickly found trouble, giving up a home run to the first batter he faced on Sunday. Jett Music launched a leadoff homer in the first inning on a 3-2 pitch. Soon after, Carlos Lugos tripled, setting up a two-run home run from Joey Morton to round out Campbell's three-run opening frame.
Campbell extended its lead to five runs in the second inning with Jonah Oster's two-run single to left field. However, the Aggies responded in the third, as Tinsley delivered a two-out solo home run to cut Campbell's lead to 5-1. It marked Tinsley's sixth home run of the season and ninth as an Aggie.
The Aggies narrowed the gap in the fourth. Sophomore
Reginald Tuggle III led off with a single and stole second base. Senior
Kristian Amaro followed with a one-out single, and an error by Campbell's second baseman let Tuggle score, making it a three-run game. Campbell answered in the fifth when Music launched his second home run of the game, pushing the lead to 6-2.
Joey Morton capped the scoring with his second home run of the afternoon, a two-run shot in the seventh inning, finishing with four RBIs. Meanwhile, Tuggle went 2-for-3 and scored a run, highlighting key performances.
A&T returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Raleigh, NC, to face the North Carolina State University Wolfpack at 6 p.m. from Doak Field at Dail Park.
