BUIES CREEK, NC – Campbell won the first of a three-game Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) baseball series against North Carolina A&T on Friday, beating the Aggies 11-1 at Jim Perry Stadium.
The Aggies dropped to 12-32 on the season with a 3-19 mark in the CAA. Campbell remains the No. 1 team in the CAA South division, improving to 31-14 overall and 21-4 in league play. Junior
Marcus Bradshaw had an RBI, and sophomore
Bruce Wyche scored the Aggies' lone run and posted a hit.
A&T's run occurred in the visitors' sixth inning as Wyche led off the frame with a single before senior
Andrew Tinsley walked. Bradshaw then brought Wyche home on an RBI single before senior
Luis Gomez hit into a double play to put two outs on the board. The inning ended with a
Savoi Edwards strikeout. The remainder of the game was on Camels.
They picked up three runs in the first inning off A&T junior right-handed starter Ageyi Quinichett (L, 1-4). The biggest blow came on a two-run homer from Joey Morton. Logan Chapman added another run in the second on an RBI sacrifice fly to give the Camels a 4-0 lead. Campbell added another run in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Carlos Lugo. Campbell's lead grew to 6-0 on a home run from Jonah Oster in the fifth inning before the Aggies struck in the sixth.
Campbell added three more runs in its half of the sixth to take a 9-1 lead. After giving up a run in the A&T sixth, Campbell replaced right-handed starter Carter Hensley (W, 4-1) with junior RHP Mason Smith. Smith got through the seventh before retiring the Aggies in order in the eighth. The game ended via mercy rule on a two-run single from Darnell Parker, Jr., in the Campbell eighth. Parker's hit gave Campbell the necessary 10-run lead it needed after seven to enact the rule.
