ROCK HILL, SC – North Carolina A&T produced four doubles and one triple on Tuesday night against Winthrop to earn another non-conference midweek baseball win, 9-3, at Founders Field.
A&T has won five of its last six midweek games, including the last three. Six Aggies collected two hits each as A&T totaled 14 hits. Senior
Luis Gomez went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs, helping the Aggies improve to 12-31 overall. The seven pitchers used by the Eagles could not contain the Aggies' offense as the Big South Conference team dropped to 28-17.
Junior right-hander
Jacob Fields started for the Aggies and was one of five pitchers to face Winthrop. In 3 1/3 innings, Fields struck out five, walked three, and gave up three hits and two runs. Winthrop started RHP Raymond McNaught (L, 0-1). A&T pressured him early, scoring three runs in the visitors' second inning.
Junior
Marcus Bradshaw opened the frame with a triple before McNaught put two runners on by walking sophomore
Savoi Edwards after a nine-pitch battle. The Aggies put two men into scoring position when Edwards stole second base. A&T then used a miscue from the Eagles defense to post two runs as Gomez reached on an error that allowed Bradshaw and Edwards to score.
The Eagles' mistakes continued. Freshman
Luis Acevedo reached on an error, letting Gomez score and completing A&T's three-run second. The Aggies stayed aggressive. RHP Mason Tompkins replaced McNaught in the third, and Bradshaw delivered again.
Bradshaw singled with one out and moved to third on an Edwards double. Gomez then singled to left center, scoring Bradshaw. Sophomore
Boaz Harper's bunt brought home Edwards for a 5-0 A&T lead. Winthrop finally responded in the fourth against Fields.
With the bases loaded and one out, A&T replaced Fields with junior RHP
Jason Johnson. Johnson struck out Chet Bowling for the second out. Natvidad then singled in two runs, cutting A&T's lead to 5-2, before Johnson got Jaylen Hernandez to fly out, ending the threat.
Despite Winthrop's fourth-inning surge, it did not stymie A&T's offense.
Andrew Tinsley led off the fifth with a single. Tompkins retired the next two batters, but Gomez came through again with an RBI opportunity on the table. Gomez doubled to center field to bring home Tinsley. After a walk to Harper, Freshman
Luis Acevedo doubled to give the Aggies a 7-2 lead as Gomez rounded the bases to score.
Winthrop threatened in the bottom of the fifth, putting runners on second and third with two outs. A&T turned to sophomore LHP
James Van Meter, who got Colin Crowley to pop up to shortstop
JT Taylor, ending the inning. Graduate RHP
Diego Barrett (W, 2-2) followed by pitching two scoreless innings, striking out two, and allowing two hits before exiting.
A&T added a run in the eighth when senior
Nick DiCarlo scored on a wild pitch. In the ninth, the Aggies loaded the bases and scored again as DiCarlo's grounder forced out a runner at second, but freshman
Ryan Allen crossed the plate for a 9-2 lead. Graduate RHP
Kobie Cushing pitched the final two innings.
Cushing allowed a run in the ninth but got Natvidad to hit into a fielder's choice, forcing out Diego Alfonso-Rivera to end the game. The Aggies next play a three-game Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series at Campbell in Buies Creek, NC, starting Friday, May 1, at 6 p.m.
