WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – North Carolina A&T baseball endured another gut-wrenching loss on Sunday.
This time, a home run and a walk-off RBI single did the dastardly deed in an 11-10 Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) loss to the William & Mary University Tribe at Plumeri Park. The Aggies encountered their first CAA sweep of the season, falling to 4-18 overall and 2-7 in league play. WMU improved 10-12 overall and 3-3 in the CAA.
Senior
Andrew Tinsley, hot at the plate lately, sparked the Aggies in the eighth with a three-run homer to right, giving A&T a 10-9 lead. Before his blast, freshman
Carter Roberts and sophomore
Savoi Edwards singled with one out. Since joining the lineup full-time on March 15, Tinsley is 5-for-15 with four runs scored, three home runs, and six RBIs in four games.
The Aggies entered the home eighth inning with junior right-handed pitcher
Aiden Hansen (L, 1-1) on the mound for junior RHP
Jason Johnson. Hansen gave up back-to-back walks to start the frame, but soon settled in and retired the next three batters in order to send the game to the ninth inning. WMU RHP Hank Lippman opened the inning by striking out senior
Luis Gomez.
However, WMU catcher Witt Scafidi dropped the third strike, then threw wildly trying to get Gomez, putting a runner on with no outs. Junior
Marcus Bradshaw pinch-ran for Gomez and was soon picked off first. That was unfortunate since Lippman then walked sophomore
Reginald Tuggle III.
The Tribe replaced Lippman with RHP Jett Humphreys (W, 2-0) after Tuggle stole second. Humphreys got
Nick DiCarlo to fly out and struck out
Tyler Smith to end the Aggies' threat, keeping WMU within one. Humphreys then batted to start the home ninth and struck out, putting A&T two outs away from avoiding a sweep. Kevin Francella changed that.
He homered to left field, tying the game at 10, before Jamie Laskofski doubled to put the game-winning run at second base. Graduate RHP
Kobie Cushing entered the game with hopes of keeping Laskofski from scoring, thus sending the game into extra innings. But Trey Christman ended those hopes with a walk-off RBI single, concluding a disappointing three-game series in which the Aggies lost two one-run games.
DiCarlo kept his hitting streak alive at 12 straight games after going 1-for-6. He has also reached base safely in 14 consecutive games. Roberts went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI and registered his first collegiate hit with a single up the middle in the visitors' fifth inning. Tuggle and Edwards had two hits apiece, and junior
Boaz Harper homered and scored twice. Laskofski led the Tribe by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
The Aggies return to action with a midweek game at Gardner-Webb University on Tuesday, March 24. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
