BOILING SPRINGS, NC – Senior
Andrew Tinsley continued to excel at the plate, and sophomore
JT Taylor saw his bat come alive in North Carolina A&T's 10-6 non-conference baseball win over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs Tuesday night at John Henry Moss Stadium.
The win halts A&T's three-game losing streak, improving the Aggies to 5-18 overall. GWU, a Big South member, dropped to 13-12 overall.
Tinsley has started A&T's last five games and has rewarded the decision. On Tuesday, he went 2-for-5, scored three times, and drove in five runs. He also hit another home run. That makes four home runs in his last five games. Over those five games, he is 7-for-18 with seven runs scored and 11 RBIs. Tinsley's home run on Tuesday came early.
He blasted a three-run shot to left field off GWU right-hander Matt Manley (L, 0-2), scoring sophomores
Tyler Smith and
Savoi Edwards for an early 3-0 A&T lead. The Aggies scored two more runs in the third inning as Taylor got going. GWU reliever RHP Trey Graydon gave up singles to sophomore
Bruce Wyche and Edwards. Taylor then delivered a two-run RBI single through the left side, increasing the Aggies' lead to 5-0. A&T freshman starter
Benny Whiteaker gave up a run in the home third, but the Aggies returned to their offensive ways in the visitors' fifth.
Wyche walked to open the frame. Edwards followed with a double, and Tinsley walked to load the bases. A fielder's choice forced Wyche out at home. A strikeout gave the Bulldogs their second out in the inning. No bother. Senior
Luis Gomez then hit a clutch two-out, two-run RBI single to left center, scoring two more runs for a 7-1 A&T advantage.
Sophomore RHP
Braxton Davis (W, 1-1) entered in the fourth inning and pitched three scoreless innings with two strikeouts and no walks. The Aggies padded their lead in the sixth. Walks to senior
Nick DiCarlo and Edwards set up a two-out, two-run RBI single from Tinsley and an RBI single from Taylor, putting the Aggies ahead 10-1. The Bulldogs rallied, scoring once in the seventh and twice in the eighth.
They went into the ninth inning trailing 10-4. Allan Camarillo got a break to open the home ninth by reaching on an error. A&T junior RHP
Jason Johnson struck out Ethan Lio for the first out of the inning before Matt Ilgenfritz singled and Anthony Hausner walked to load the bases for the Bulldogs. Drew Ripepi capitalized by hitting a two-run single to left to cut the Aggies' lead to 10-6. A wild pitch moved Hausner to third and Ripepi to second before a hit-by-pitch to Ethan Rossow loaded the bases.
That put the tying run at the plate for the Bulldogs. The Aggies replaced Johnson with graduate RHP
Diego Barrett so he could face pinch-hitter Daniel Smith. Barrett won the battle. He struck Smith out on four pitches, then got Thad Ector to fly out to end the ballgame.
DiCarlo saw his 12-game hitting streak come to an end by going 0-for-4. He did walk and scored a run, and now has reached base safely in his last 15 games. Edwards walked three times, scored four times, and went 2-for-2 on Tuesday. Ector and Ripepi had two RBIs apiece for the Bulldogs.
A&T will take a weekend off from Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play this weekend when they host the Georgetown Hoyas for a three-game series, starting on Friday with a 6 p.m. start from War Memorial Stadium.
