GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T's junior
Trinity Glover delivered a crucial home run in an effort to prevent a three-game sweep in the Aggies' Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) softball series.
However, despite this pivotal moment, A&T could not hold off the UNC Wilmington Seahawks, who secured a 7-3 win over the Aggies on Sunday at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex (LASC). The Aggies dropped to 13-18 overall and 0-6 in CAA play. UNCW improved to 3-0 after its first CAA series and is now 15-10 overall. The Seahawks won Game 1 with strong pitching and an effective offense, winning in five innings. On Saturday, a big inning helped the Seahawks secure a second five-inning victory.
Sunday's action started with the Seahawks taking an early lead. They scored two runs in the second inning and two in the third. The Aggies used their two top pitchers, juniors
Devin Long (L, 3-6) and
Aaliyah Williams, throughout the game to slow UNCW's offense. The Aggies also relied on Glover in the fourth inning to get back into the game.
UNCW relief pitcher Peyton Eckert struck out sophomores
Jaden James and
Tyra Robinson in the frame. Between those strikeouts, sophomore
Ayanna Mears walked on four pitches. Freshman
Ava McCauley then earned an eight-pitch walk. With two outs, Glover stepped to the plate and hit the fourth pitch from Eckert over the left-field wall. It was her second home run of the season and the 10th of her career. The homer also cut the Seahawks' lead to 4-3.
Camille Hamilton (W, 6-2) replaced Eckert in the circle. Hamilton walked
Aaliyah Williams on four pitches, helping the Aggies keep the rally going. UNCW then caught
Aaliyah Williams trying to steal, ending the A&T threat. Unfortunately, after the Glover homer, the Seahawks slowly started to pull away.
Averie Daughtery's RBI single up the middle scored Cassidy Relay in the fifth. Relay had walked to open the frame. A&T junior
Shandi Brown led off the Aggies' fifth with a single but was left stranded. The Seahawks added two more runs in the top of the sixth. The Aggies brought
Aaliyah Williams back to the circle in the sixth, but Ava Brookshire greeted her with a leadoff double. After Allison Corbin walked on four pitches, the Aggies turned to sophomore
Lauren Hardy to pitch.
Grace Hennesey kept the rallying going, however. Her infield single loaded the bases for pinch-hitter Carson Fleming, who singled through the left side to score pinch runner Ava Tsiouplis to give UNCW a 6-3 lead. Emily Whitwell hit into a fielder's choice, which allowed McCauley from her shortstop position to throw out pinch runner Addi Yates trying to score. Averie Daughtry also hit into a fielder's choice, leaving Mears without a play at home.
Instead, Mears threw out Whitwell, trying to reach second. It allowed Hennesey to score, however, giving UNCW a 7-3 lead. Becca Merrick walked to keep the inning going, but Hardy got Sierra Persinger to ground out to end the frame. The Aggies failed to muster much offense from there. Robinson singled in the sixth with one out but got stranded at first. Long returned to the circle for the Aggies in the seventh, retiring UNCW in order.
Brown gave the Aggies hope in the seventh with a one-out single. Hamilton struck out senior
Katriel Williams and got
Destiny Sims to ground out, ending the ballgame. Merrick led the Seahawks, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Brown led the Aggies with a 2-for-3 day.
The Aggies will try to get back on track against a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opponent. Morgan State visits LASC on Tuesday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
