Aggies Fall to Morgan State

Jaden James homered and doubled on Tuesday.

GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against the Morgan State Bears on Tuesday at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex. In Game 1, the Bears held off a late A&T charge to win 5-4. In the second game, Morgan State's pitching came through in the late innings to hold off the Aggies 9-6.

The two losses dropped the Aggies to 13-20. Freshman Taniyah Thomas went 3-for-7 with a triple. Sophomore added her fourth homer of the season and a double. Tyra Robinson, another sophomore, hit her fifth home run of 2026. With the two wins, Morgan State improved to 3-15.

Freshman Maliyah Alexander (L, 2-4) started for the Aggies and dodged trouble in the third, stranding runners on second and third. In the bottom of the inning, her teammates delivered with two-out hits. Sophomore Ayanna Mears singled, and junior Shandi Brown moved to second after a walk.

Junior Destiny Sims lined out for the second out of the inning before Thomas delivered a two-run triple to right field to give the Aggies a 2-0 advantage. Continuing to pitch well, Alexander retired the Bears in order in the fourth before Morgan State caught fire in the visitors' fifth. After an RBI single from Olivia Pagano, junior pitcher Devin Long entered the circle for the Aggies.

Hunter Newman hit a three-run homer over the left-field wall, putting the Bears up 4-2. Alison Keener followed with an RBI single, capping a five-run, six-hit inning. A&T rallied in the sixth with a leadoff single from Thomas, who reached third on a wild pitch. James then hit a two-run homer to bring the Aggies within one, 5-4, but the inning ended on a strikeout and a flyout.

A&T kept Morgan State scoreless in the seventh and put the tying run on base in the home half, with Mears reaching on an error. However, Morgan State starter Millie Cousins (W, 2-5) struck out Sims to end the game. Newman led the Bears with a 2-for-3 day that included three RBIs and one run scored.

Turning to Game 2, Sims had a 2-for-4 performance with one RBI. Sophomore Lauren Hardy (L, 2-5) got the start, but Morgan State got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the first and three more in the second.

The Aggies tried to keep pace. In the home first, the Aggies loaded the bases against Morgan State starter Serena Rodriguez (W, 1-6). Rodriguez walked Mears to force in a run, as Brown scored after earning a walk from Rodriguez. A&T put up two more runs in the second inning to cut Morgan State's lead to 6-3. Katriel singled up the middle, stole second, and moved to third on a groundout. Brown brought her home with an RBI single. Brown came home on an RBI double from Sims before Sims was thrown out trying to stretch her double into a triple, ending the A&T threat.

Morgan State scored once in the third and twice in the fourth, highlighted by Denver Obermeyer's RBI double for a 9-3 lead. The Aggies rallied in the fifth: Mears walked, Robinson hit a two-run homer, then McCauley and Glover followed with a single and double, putting two in scoring position.

A groundout from Katriel Williams allowed McCauley to score, drawing the Aggies to within three runs. The frame ended with a pop-out by Thomas. Becoming the first of seven straight batters Rodriguez retired, Thomas began a streak that closed out the game. In Game 2, Obermeyer led the Bears by going 2-for-3, picking up two RBIs and a run scored.

The Aggies return to Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play on Friday, traveling to Charleston, SC, to face the College of Charleston in the first of a three-game series. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
