A&T Loses Offensive-Filled Game to Camels

Savoi Edwards hits his first home run of the season. Caleb Beals hits his first career home run.

GREENSBORO – After 32 runs scored, 26 hits recorded, and 10 errors made, the Campbell Fighting Camels claimed victory in Game 1 of a three-game Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) baseball series over the North Carolina A&T Aggies, 21-11 at War Memorial Stadium on Friday.

There were several times during Friday's game where it appeared A&T would rally after trailing 6-0, 9-3, and 16-6, but the comeback never materialized because the Aggies had a tough time keeping the Camels off the scoreboard due to seven errors that led to nine unearned runs scoring for the Camels. Campbell also hit five home runs, with four of them going over the left-field wall.

Campbell posted six runs in its first inning behind a three-run homer from Jonah Oster, a two-run home run from Andrew Schuldt, and a solo shot from Logan Chapman. But the Aggies chipped away at that lead immediately in the bottom half of the first, with senior Nick DiCarlo starting the rally.

DiCarlo, the hottest hitter in the Aggies' lineup, opened the Aggies first with a single through the left side. DiCarlo has reached base safely in nine consecutive games, and his 3-for-5 evening increased his hitting streak to seven straight games. Junior Marcus Bradshaw followed with a walk, and DiCarlo and Bradshaw moved into scoring position on a wild pitch by Campbell right-handed starter Connor Hensley.

An error at second base on a Tyler Smith ground ball allowed the Aggies to score their first run, which was followed by an RBI sacrifice fly from sophomore Bruce Wyche to score Bradshaw. Smith found himself on third base after two wild pitches, leading to him scoring on an error in right field to cut the Camels' lead to 6-3. Campbell regained its six-run lead on a two-run homer from Joey Morton and a run scored by Carlos Lugo on an A&T error.

A&T's answer in the third inning included a career first. Redshirt freshman Caleb Beals blasted a three-run home run to left field, cutting the Camels' lead to 9-6. However, a seven-run visitors' fourth that included a two-run homer from Oster, an RBI double from Chapman, and an RBI triple from Mike Murphy put the Camels ahead 16-6. And the runs kept coming.

The Aggies added to the football score vibe by scoring four runs in their half of the fourth. A single from Bradshaw and a walk to Smith led to an RBI single from Wyche. Sophomore Savoi Edwards followed with a three-run homer over the right-field wall to bring the Aggies to within six runs at 16-10. It was Edwards' first home run of the season and the sixth of his career. Unfortunately, the Aggies never got any closer.

RHP Mason Smith (W, 1-0) entered the game in the home fifth after DiCarlo scored on a passed ball to cut Campbell's lead to 17-11. Mason Smith pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, giving up only one hit, walking two, and striking out five to calm down a wild game. Senior RHP Gavin Sentell (L, 1-2) made the start for the Aggies. Wyche added a 2-for-4 day for the Aggies, driving in two runs and scoring once. In addition to his two home runs, Oster scored three times and drove in five runs.

Game 2 will take place at The War on Saturday. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
