Campbell Beats A&T Behind Strong Pitching Performance

Nick DiCarlo is on an eight-game hitting streak.

GREENSBORO – The Campbell Fighting Camels got a strong pitching performance from right-handed starter David Rossow (W, 3-1) Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium.

The Camels used Rossow's pitching performance and another strong day at the plate to defeat the North Carolina A&T Aggies in Game 2 of a three-game Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) baseball series, 10-0 in seven innings. Rossow pitched 6 1/3 innings of shutout baseball, giving up three hits, walking one, and striking out 13.

A&T senior outfielder Nick DiCarlo could not be slowed, even by Rossow. Doubling in the third inning, he extended his hitting streak to eight games and has now reached base safely in his last 10. Sophomores Bruce Wyche and Savoi Edwards also contributed hits for the Aggies. However, the Camels not only countered with strong pitching but also collected five extra base hits. Leading the way for Campbell, Jonah Oster finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored, and two RBIs. For the series, he has four extra base hits—including two home runs—and seven RBIs.

After a 32-run, 26-hit, 10-error game on Friday in Game 1 of the series. Things appeared calm to start Saturday's play. The Camels scored a run in the visitors' second on a solo home run from Carlos Lugo for the first run. Campbell got its offense going in the third, however. Oster ignited the Camels with an RBI double to score Joe Simpson, who walked with one out. A&T starter, RHP Jordan Bright (L, 1-4) struck out Joey Morton for the frame's second out.

However, the Camels registered a two-out RBI single from Andrew Schuldt and an RBI double from Lugo to score two more runs. A throwing error allowed another run to score, giving the Camels a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third. Oster and Schuldt both drove in runs in the visitors' fourth before an RBI sacrifice fly from Morton gave the Camels an 8-0 advantage. In the seventh, Campbell added two runs, moving the game toward an early finish under CAA run-rule with a 10-0 lead. The Aggies tried to extend play in the home seventh, as Edwards singled. Campbell then replaced Rossow with Beau Brailey, who induced a game-ending 6-4-3 double play from Luis Acevedo, clinching a 2-0 series lead for the Camels.

Game 3 is scheduled for Sunday at The War, with the first pitch set for noon.
