GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T baseball has a lot of rookies. Therefore, it is a good sign for the future that those rookies secure weekly honors from the Coastal Athletic Association. It has happened twice this season, including on Monday when A&T leadoff man Bruce Wyche became the latest.
Wyche batted .500 over five games last week to secure CAA co-Rookie of the Week honors on Monday, sharing the accolade with a player from the Aggies opponent during last weekend's three-game CAA series at War Memorial Stadium, Monmouth's Ryan Mealy.
"I'm proud of Bruce," said A&T head coach Ben Hall. "He is a tireless worker, and I thought he had a great week. His growth so far is exciting, and I can't wait to see what he's going to do next."
Wyche went 10-for-20 last week, helping the Aggies post a 3-2 record during the week with a midweek win over Davidson and two wins over the Monmouth Hawks over the weekend that helped the Aggies remain in a three-way tie for second place in the CAA standings.
In the process, Wyche raised his batting average by 43 points, from hitting .240 to hitting .283, going into A&T's midweek game with the High Point University Panthers on Tuesday at 6 p.m. from The War.
On Tuesday against the Davidson Wildcats at The War, Wyche hit an RBI single in the home eighth to score sophomore Ellis Reid to give the Aggies a 7-5 lead going into the ninth, where senior right-hander Jacob Halford closed out the game with a save. Wyche went 2-for-5 in the contest. The next night at HPU, Wyche doubled and homered in an 11-10 loss to the Panthers in High Point.
Wyche led off Wednesday's game with a home run. He went 3-for-5 in the contest with three RBIs and two runs scored. In a doubleheader sweep of the Hawks on Saturday, Wyche combined to go 3-for-6, belting his sixth home run of the season in A&T's 9-8 Game 2 win. Wyche scored four times last week, hit two home runs, drove in five runs and doubled.
He leads the Aggies in home runs, runs scored (33) and on-base percentage (.416). Pitchers have enhanced Wyche's on-base percentage in 2025. Opposing pitchers have hit Wyche with a pitch 13 times this season, second in the CAA only to Campbell's Darnell Parker, Jr. (14).
Wyche joins freshman teammate Tyler Smith as Aggies who have won rookie of the week this season. Senior RHP Angel Ortiz claimed co-pitcher of the week accolades on March 3. After Tuesday's game, the Aggies will travel to Newark, Del., to play in a three-game series against the University of Delaware Blue Hens, April 18-20.
