A&T Softball Loses Second Straight to UNCW

Lauren Hardy goes 2-for-2.

WILMINGTON, NC – The North Carolina A&T softball team's offense fared better against UNC Wilmington on Saturday during Game 2 of a three-game Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series at Boseman Field. But the Seahawks still pulled away late to defeat the Aggies 10-2 in six innings.

Freshman Lauren Hardy went 2-for-2 with a run scored as the Aggies dropped to 7-22 overall and 0-8 in CAA action. The Seahawks got a three-hit, four-RBI afternoon from Allison Corbin to improve to 17-15 overall and 3-5 in league play. Corbin also scored twice.

Sophomore Aaliyah Williams (L, 2-7) got the start for A&T. She gave up three runs in the first, but all three were unearned. Aaliyah Williams had a much smoother second inning. She hit UNCW's Lauryn Richards with a 1-0 pitch with one out in the inning but recovered to strikeout Cassidy Relay before getting Maggie Partee to fly out to end the inning.

In the third inning, the Seahawks put together a rally that included an RBI single from Corbin. Morgan Britt brought her home with an RBI triple, leading to Hardy replacing Aaliyah Williams in the circle. But an infield hit from Sierra Persinger allowed Britt to score for a 6-0 UNCW lead.

A&T got two runs back from UNCW starter Taylor Barlow (W, 4-3) in the top of the fourth. Hardy led the inning off with a single before freshman Ayanna Mears hit a one-out single down the right-field line, sending Hardy to third. Mears stole second to put both runners into scoring position. Barkhimer brought Hardy home with a groundout to second.

A passed ball on ball four allowed Mears to score and sophomore Destiny Sims to reach base, cutting the Seahawks advantage to 6-2. Freshman Jaden James reached on an error, putting runners at first and third before Barlow ended the inning with a strikeout.

UNCW recovered in its half of the fourth inning thanks to a one-out, two-run single from Corbin, giving the Seahawks a six-run lead. Hardy held the Seahawks scoreless in the fifth, but the Seahawks got the two runs it needed to end the game early in the sixth. Corbin secured another RBI and Richardson's RBI sacrifice fly to left gave the Seahawks a 10-2 lead, thus ending the game based on the run-rule.

A&T will try to avoid the sweep on Sunday when the two teams play at 1 p.m.
