WILMINGTON, NC – Sophomore Trinity Glover hit a solo home run, but UNC Wilmington still completed its sweep of the North Carolina A&T softball team, winning a 6-1 win at Boseman Field on Sunday.
The Aggies had their best offensive day of the series on Sunday, producing eight hits, including two apiece from sophomore Aaliyah Williams and freshman Tyra Robinson. Despite the better offensive output, the Aggies dropped to 7-23 overall and 0-9 in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play. After UNCW pitcher Lynsie Herman (W, 4-1) pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and one walk, the Seahawks improved to 18-12 overall and 4-5 in league play.
Cassidy Relay gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the second inning, but Glover tied the game with her team-leading fourth home run. She is tied for sixth in the CAA in home runs. But the Seahawks regained the lead on an RBI single from Grace Hennessy in the third. That was followed by a two-run RBI single from Sierra Persinger to give UNCW a 4-1 advantage.
A&T started causing trouble again in the visitor's fourth when freshman Ayanna Mears walked with one out and stole second with two outs. But Herman earned a strikeout against Glover to end the frame. An RBI sacrifice fly from Allison Corbin in the fourth added another run for UNCW before the Aggies tried to rally again in the fifth.
Sophomore Avery Evans singled to right field to open the frame before Robinson ripped a double down the left-field line to put Aggies on second and third. An infield single from Aaliyah Williams loaded the bases before Katriel Williams recorded the first out of the inning with a pop-out.
Roshell Williams was called out for batter's interference, and the Aggies stranded three when Herman ended the inning with a strikeout of sophomore Destiny Sims. A&T reliever Aaliyah Williams held the Seahawks scoreless in the fifth, but Morgan Britt earned an RBI single in the sixth to give the Seahawks a 6-1 lead going into the visitor's seventh.
A&T put two runners on with a single from Robinson and an error that allowed Aaliyah Williams to reach. But freshman Lauren Hardy grounded out to end the game. Senior Joey Barkhimer (L, 3-10) got the start for A&T, pitching three innings on Sunday.
The Aggies will host a three-game CAA series this weekend starting Friday with a 2 p.m. game from the Lady Aggies Softball Complex against Towson.
