GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T head baseball coach Ben Hall announced hiring Billy Funk on Thursday as the program's new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
"I'm very excited to add Billy, his wife Sara, and their daughter Oaklynn to our baseball family," Hall said. "I have a ton of respect for him as a person and coach. Watching his growth over the years, his work ethic on the road, determination, and attention to detail really reinforces why he is the right fit for this position. Billy is a people person who loves the game. I have no doubt he will be a key resource to our growth trajectory."
Funk spent the past two seasons with the Radford Highlanders baseball program as the hitting coach. In 2024, three Highlanders batted well over .300, led by Cameron Pittman, who hit .357 with 18 extra-base hits, including eight triples. The Highlanders hit 23 triples and averaged 0.46 triples per game, ranking eighth and third nationally, respectively.
Before arriving at the Virginia campus to coach the Highlanders, Funk coached at National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) school Louisburg College, where he led their recruiting efforts and coached infielders. He also spent two seasons at Wingate (2016, 2017), coaching outfielders and assisting with the offense. He also supervised academic affairs and was involved in recruiting.
"I want to thank (A&T Director of Athletics) Earl Hilton and Ben Hall for giving me the opportunity to help lead the North Carolina A&T baseball program," Funk said. "I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to build on the rich tradition that A&T has in the community/University and within the program. I am looking forward to working with this staff and players as we work to build for a CAA (Coastal Athletic Association) championship."
Before his time at Wingate, Funk coached two seasons as an assistant at Shippensburg before serving as an assistant at Rappahannock Community College. Collegiately, he started his career for the Rappahannock. He helped the Gulls win the 2008 Virginia Community College System Championship, earning first-team all-conference accolades during the run.
After winning at Rappahannock, he transferred to Bluefield State (Va.), where he completed his collegiate career. During his time at Bluefield State, the Rams won the 2009 National Christian College Association (NCCA) national championship.
His other experience includes serving as a hitting coach for the Baseball Performance Academy and holding various positions at the minor league level within the Toronto Blue Jayes and Baltimore Orioles MLB organization.
Funk earned his degree in sports management from Bluefield State in 2011.
