BUIES CREEK, NC – The Campbell Fighting Camels' pitching against the North Carolina A&T Aggies thus far in their three-game Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) softball series has been superb.
After no-hitting the Aggies on Friday, Campbell starting pitcher Kayla Howard (W, 4-0) pitched a complete-game one-hitter to help the Camels defeat the Aggies 8-0 in five innings Saturday afternoon at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium. Graduate Brenay Howard had the Aggies' only hit on the day, as the Aggies dropped to 11-33 overall and 5-18 in CAA action. Howard posted eight strikeouts and two walks to help the Camels improve to 30-19-1 overall and 18-5 in league play.
Kayla Douglas (L, 2-8) got the start for A&T, giving up a first-inning hit to Tyra Parker with one out. But Lindsay Lumsden grounded out to shortstop, and Brooke Carey popped out to end the inning. In the visitor's second, Howard earned a leadoff single before Howard struck out the side to put Douglas back in the circle for A&T, where Douglas retired the Camels in order.
A&T added another base runner in the third when senior Alyxx Estrada walked with two outs, but a strikeout by Shandi Brown sent the game into the home third. The Camels put a run on the board thanks to an RBI sacrifice fly from Alyssa Henault. Campbell added four more runs in the fourth when Carey hit a one-out home run to left field.
The Camels added three extra-base hits in the inning, starting with a Makayla McClain double to put runners at second and third. Charlie Montgomery singled up the middle to bring home another run, leading to junior Joey Barkhimer taking over in the circle. Montgomery stole second upon Barkhimer's entry, allowing McClain to come home on the throw for a 4-0 Campbell lead.
Allyiah Swiney doubled home Montgomery for the final run of the inning. The Aggies did get a runner in scoring position in the visitor's fifth as freshman Jamari Moss walked, and sophomore Makayla Layton moved her to second on a sacrifice bunt. The inning ended on strikeouts by Camryn Caldwell and Charlize Taylor.
Campbell ended the game in the fifth with a three-run inning aided by Tristin Doster's two-run double and Sterling Hairston's RBI double. Swiney went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. The two teams will play the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday from Campbell.
