BUIES CREEK, NC – The North Carolina A&T softball team finished the weekend at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium with a 6-1 loss to the Campbell Fighting Camels on Sunday. The Aggies avoided their third straight shutout at the hands of the Camels by scoring in the seventh. But they still dropped to 11-34 overall and 5-19 in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) action. Meanwhile, the Camels received another solid pitching performance from Isabella Smith (W, 21-6) to improve to 31-19-1 overall and 19-5 in the CAA.
Senior pitcher Sharla Kirkpatrick (L, 4-14) got the start for A&T before Amaya Kearse took over in the fourth inning. Against Kirkpatrick, the Camels took a 2-0 lead in the second inning behind RBI singles from Kayla Thomas and Allyiah Swiney. A double play helped the Aggies escape the inning without any more runs scoring.
Delaney McDilda singled up the middle to score Alyssa Henault in the third inning to give the Camels a 3-0 advantage. Kirkpatrick exited the circle for Kearse to start the fourth. Kearse gave up a two-out home run to Swiney. Swiney drove in another run in the home sixth to give the Camels a 5-0 advantage. Savannah White closed out the scoring for Campbel with an RBI double.
Smith, who missed throwing a perfect game by one walk on Friday, had a perfect game going into the visitor's seventh on Sunday. But senior Alyxx Estrada ended her hopes of that milestone with an infield single. A strikeout by freshman Destiny Sims followed, but Estrada did steal second base to move into scoring position.
Freshman Jamari Moss provided the Aggies with their first run of the series by hitting an RBI double to center to score Estrada. Smith struck out the final two batters she faced to secure the series sweep for the Camels. Swiney went 3-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI.
The Aggies will host Stony Brook for a three-game series at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex starting Friday at 1 p.m.
