BUIES CREEK, NC – North Carolina A&T received a strong pitching performance from the circle. Unfortunately, Campbell's pitching performance was stronger. Fighting Camels pitcher Isabella Smith (W, 20-6) out-dueled Aggies pitcher Sharla Kirkpatrick (L, 4-13) in a 5-0 Campbell win over A&T in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) softball play on Friday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
Kirkpatrick pitched six innings and surrendered four earned runs on 11 hits while striking out one and walking one, as the Aggies dropped to 11-32 overall and 5-17 in the CAA. Smith was one walk away from pitching a perfect game. She did complete the no-hitter against A&T, helping the Camels improve to 29-19-1 overall and 17-5 in league play.
Campbell took a 1-0 lead after the second. Alyssa Henault helped the Camels add another run with an RBI single to right field in the third inning. Kirkpatrick pitched around a jam in the fourth inning thanks to some outstanding defense behind her in the circle. After surrendering back-to-back singles from the Camels, Aggies shortstop Makayla Layton tagged Brooke Carey out trying to go to third.
Allyiah Swiney followed with a single up the middle, but freshman Trinity Glover threw out Madilyn Gillespie, trying to go home to end the inning. But Henault returned in the fifth to provide an RBI double to give Campbell a 3-0 advantage. Lindsay Lumsden's bunt single allowed another run to score. But freshman Jamari Moss threw out Lumsden trying to go to second before tagging out Henault at home to end the inning.
Smith entered the sixth with a perfect game. She earned a strikeout against Glover to open the frame before her perfect game ended when she walked senior Kayla Taylor on seven pitches. She struck out the side by striking out Layton and Alyxx Estrada. After Campbell added a run in the sixth, the Aggies went down in order in the seventh. Smith had 15 strikeouts in no-hitting the Aggies.
The two teams play again on Saturday at 3 p.m.
