GREENSBORO -- North Carolina A&T State University's Director of Athletics, Earl M. Hilton III, formally introduced new head football coach, Shawn Gibbs, to the media, alums, faculty and staff on Wednesday inside the campus Student Center's Deese Ballroom.
Gibbs is heading the Aggie program after spending three seasons as the head football coach at Fort Valley State University. During his tenure, FVSU football went 17-6 in the Division II Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and 22-9 overall.
Gibbs is a familiar figure to A&T after serving as the running backs coach and special teams coordinator from 2011-21, to program all-time greats such as Tarik Cohen, Mike Mayhew, Marquell Cartwright, and Jah-Martin. His special teams stars included NCAA record-breaking punt returner Khris Gardin, future NFL standout Tony McRae, and Malik Wilson.
Gibbs is the 23rd head football coach in program history, taking on a team with a rich history in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) with 11 championship titles. The Aggies also have nine black college football national championships.
Coach Shawn Gibbs says that he knows his job is to win football games, and he will instill a championship mindset in his players, reminding them of the meaning of being an Aggie.
"We are going to have a disciplined football team," said Gibbs. "We've got to have an edge to us, a controlled edge, but an edge. Anything you can do, you can do it from right here at A&T. I can go on and on and tell you about all the greats that have walked this campus, but I would be here all day. As coaches and players, you are representing all of those who came before you and leaving your own legacy."
Coach Gibbs made it clear that the players will "walk like, talk like, and act like a champion in all that you do."
