 NORTH CAROLINA A&T AGGIES STORYLINES

  • The Aggies have four crucial games remaining on its regular-season schedule, starting tonight at Monmouth.
  • The Aggies find themselves 2 ½ games out of fourth place in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) standings.
  • A No. 4 seed at the CAA tournament, March 3-7, in Washington DC, gives the Aggies a double bye. It would leave them needing only three games to win the conference tournament. Otherwise, the Aggies would need to win four straight games to advance to the NCAA tournament.
  • But the Aggies likely need to win out to obtain the fourth seed. A loss tonight severely damages those chances. But a win tonight, heading into a road game with Towson, could reverse the Aggies seeding fortunes.
  • A&T comes into West Long Branch, N.J., 1-3 in its last four games after a 69-59 loss at Stony Brook on Saturday. Also included in that 1-3 mark is a home loss to Monmouth on Jan. 28.
  • The 3-point shooting that became A&T's lifeblood early in the season has fallen off in the last four games. The Aggies are shooting 26-for-104 (.250) over their previous four outings. A&T's opponents are also a plus-10 against the Aggies on the glass.
  • Stony Brook outrebounded the Aggies 49-34 on Saturday as the Seawolves defeated the Aggies 69-59. The Aggies were 6-for-22 (.273) from 3-point range and 9-for-18 from the free throw line.
  • After winning four straight CAA road games to open their inaugural season in the conference, the Aggies have lost their last two road games as they are in the middle of a three-game road trip. The Aggies will close out the regular season with games at home against Delaware and Hampton.
  • A&T sophomore guard Kam Woods showed signs of finding his rhythm from the outside again. Woods spent most of the season as the CAA leader in 3-pointers made and the leading scorer in the conference in CAA games only.
  • Woods hit a slump at the end of January going into February. In the five games before the Aggies faced Stony Brook, Woods shot 18-for-71 (.254) from the field, 6-for-37 (.162) from three and 10-for-19 (.526) from the line.
  • But against Stony Brook, Woods scored 18 points, had seven rebounds and dished out four assists. He was 3-for-6 from 3-point range. Woods is third in the conference in scoring (17.5) and second in the league in 3-pointers made per game (2.9).
  • Phillip Shumpert is the Aggies head coach on an interim basis. He took over the program for Will Jones in August. He missed three games with COVID but returned to earn the big win over UNCG.
  • Shumpert has been a significant part in helping the Aggies recruit some of their talent.
  • Shumpert took over on an interim basis in August. Shumpert has coached on many levels, including high school, Division II, junior college and Division I, and has head coaching experience on the junior college level for five years.

 SCOUTING THE MONMOUTH HAWKS

  • The Hawks come in as one of the hottest teams in the CAA. The Hawks had their four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday with an 86-57 loss to conference-leading Hofstra at home.
  • The Hawks' four-game streak started with its 79-64 win over the Aggies in Corbett on Jan. 28. In that game, the Hawks shot a season-high 52.8 percent from the floor and went 6-for-11 (.545) from 3-point range. They also shot 81 percent (17-for-21) from the line.
  • Monmouth kept the momentum going beyond A&T. During Monmouth's four-game winning streak, the Hawks shot 45.9 percent from the floor while holding opponents to 37.2 percent shooting.
  • Tahron Allen led the Hawks during the winning streak, averaging 19.0 points on 31-for-61 (.508) shooting from the floor. He also averaged 5.8 rebounds in those four games. In the first meeting against A&T, Allen finished with 23 points and nine rebounds on 8-for-15 shooting.
  • The last time out against Hofstra, the Hawks were not as successful. They shot 31.7 percent from the field, and Hofstra outrebounded the Hawks 43-33. Hofstra also knocked down 14 3-pointers in the game.
  • Andrew Ball led the way for Monmouth with 11 points on 3-for-3 shooting from 3-point range. Klemen Vuga was the only other Hawk in double figures with 10. Allen finished with seven points and seven rebounds.
  • Monmouth head coach King Rice is in his 12th season at the university. Rice has a 187-188 record and has led the Hawks to three postseason appearances.
  • He led Monmouth to the second round of the 2016 National Invitational Tournament (NIT). The following year the Hawks lost in the first round of the NIT. In 2020, Rice led the Hawks to the NCAA tournament, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the tournament.
  • He won MAAC coach of the year three times and led the Hawks to three MAAC regular-season championships. His familiarity with North Carolinians comes from his days playing point guard for the University of North Carolina (1987-91). He helped the Tar Heels reach the Final Four in 1991.
