NORTH CAROLINA A&T AGGIES STORYLINES

  • It will be a big night for North Carolina A&T. New head football coach Vincent Brown will address Aggie Nation at halftime about his goal and aspirations for Aggies football. It will also be Greek Night at #ClubCorbett.
  • On the basketball court, the Aggies will be looking for their fourth straight win after defeating traditional HBCU rival Hampton Monday night on MLK Day.
  • The Aggies have shot the ball well during their three-game winning streak, shooting 45 percent. But what has been more impressive is A&T's defense.
  • The Aggies have held their previous three opponents to a combined 34.9 percent shooting, 28.6 percent from the 3-point arc, and those opponents averaged 65.7 points against A&T's D.
  • Marcus Watson has been magnificent during the 3-game streak as well. He is averaging 18.6 points and 6.3 rebounds over A&T's last three games. He is also shooting 48 percent from the floor. Inside 3-point range, Watson is 21-for-31 (.677) during the Aggies winning streak.
  • No one has been a more dangerous scorer since Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play started than sophomore guard Kam Woods. Woods is coming off a 27-point performance against Hampton, where he shot 9-for-17 from the floor and 4-for-8 from 3-point range.
  • Woods has scored 20-plus points seven times this season. In CAA games only, he leads the conference in scoring at 21.1 points per game. He is shooting 46 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from 3-point range in conference games. But surprisingly, in conference play, he only shoots 62.5 from the free throw line.
  • Woods leads the Aggies in scoring (18.7), assists (3.3) and steals (1.6). Nationally, he ranks 11th in 3-point attempts (160), 16th in 3-pointers made per game (3.2) and 11th in 3-pointers made (61).
  • The Aggies have become a team that finds ways to win. Before their win over Hampton on Monday, the Aggies had trailed by double figures in eight straight games. They won three of those games.
  • In addition, the Aggies have shot 60.5 percent from the line in conference play. Yet, the Aggies are 5-0 when they shoot less than 60 percent from the line in a game, including Monday, when they shot 58.3 percent.
  • The Aggies played one of their best games of the season against a Division I opponent. They shot 53.3 percent from the field in the first half, building a 42-30 lead at halftime. It was their best shooting first-half shooting percentage of the season. The Aggies also never trailed in the game, leading for 38 minutes and 47 seconds.
  • Phillip Shumpert is the Aggies head coach on an interim basis. He took over the program for Will Jones in August. He missed three games with COVID but returned to earn the big win over UNCG.
  • Shumpert has been a significant part in helping the Aggies recruit some of their talent.
  • Shumpert took over on an interim basis in August. Shumpert has coached on many levels, including high school, Division II, junior college and Division I, and has head coaching experience on the junior college level for five years.

 SCOUTING THE TOWSON TIGERS

  •  Towson comes to Aggieland for the first time, and the Tigers come in on a two-game winning streak.
  •  Towson is 1-1 on the road in conference play this season, losing to Delaware on Jan. 11 after beating Stony Brook on Jan. 27.
  • At home, the Tigers are coming off a big win over Hofstra, the CAA's preseason No. 2 team, 68-47. The Tigers held Hofstra to 32.8 percent shooting from the floor and 14.8 percent from 3-point range.
  • Nicolas Timberlake led the way with 17 points and five rebounds on 7-for-15 shooting. Cam Holden scored in double figures with 13 points and seven rebounds, shooting 5-for-9 from the floor.
  • Holden is a crucial player for the Tigers. He is second in the league in assists (4.6), third in steals (2.1) and second in free throw attempts (105). Nationally, Holden is 75th in assists, 48th in steals and 45th in free throw attempts.
  • Holden is the second-leading scorer at 14.4 points per game. He also averages 6.4 rebounds per game.
  • Timberlake leads the team in scoring at 15.7 points per game. He also shoots 84.8 percent from the free throw line. He plays 35.8 minutes per game for Towson, scoring a season-high 27 against UMass.
  • Charles Thompson is the other Tiger, averaging double figures at 12.2 points per game on 55.8 percent shooting. He also leads the team in rebounding at 7.4 per game.
  • The Tigers are one of the best rebounding teams in the conference. They are second in the league in rebounding margin at plus-5.1. They are also second in the league in defensive rebounding at 12.3 per game.
  • The Tigers are led by Pat Skerry, who is in his 12th season. Skerry has a 184-180 record at Towson. He led the Tigers to the NIT last season, posting a 25-8 record overall and a 15-3 mark in the CAA. He also led them to the Vegas 16 postseason tournament in 2016 and the CIT quarterfinals in 2014.
  • During his first season in Towson in 2011-12, the Tigers went 1-31 before having the nation's biggest single-season NCAA turnaround in 2012-13 when the Tigers went 18-13. Skerry also spent two seasons at Curry before coming to Towson.

 THE SERIES

  • It will be the first meeting between A&T and Towson.
  • The Aggies will have seven first-time opponents in the CAA this season. They are 2-1 in those games thus far.
