NORTH CAROLINA A&T AGGIES STORYLINES

  • The Aggies could be embarking on the start of a new rivalry. The Aggies travel to nearby Elon to face the Phoenix in the first-ever conference game between the two Piedmont schools.
  • Despite the proximity of the two schools, tonight will be the first meeting since 2001, when the Aggies and the Phoenix met at Elon.
  • The Aggies are trying to end a two-game losing streak after falling to UNC Wilmington on Saturday, 66-61.
  • The Aggies last two opponents, 23rd-ranked College of Charleston and UNC Wilmington, are a combined 29-4 overall and 8-0 in the CAA.
  • Charleston and UNCW also have the nation's top two winning streaks, with the Cougars winning 15 straight and the Seahawks winning 14 in a row.
  • Despite the difficult competition, sophomore guard Kam Woods continues to play well. Woods has combined to score 54 points in the last two games, including 30 against Charleston.
  • Also, over the last two games, Woods is shooting 55.6 percent (20-for-36) from the floor and 57.1 percent (12-for-21) from 3-point range. Woods ranks 15th nationally in 3-pointers made per game (3.25) and 14th in 3-pointers made (52).
  • In CAA games only, Woods is averaging 22.3 points in four games. In CAA games only, he is tied for the conference lead in scoring with Hofstra's Aaron Estrada.
  • Another player striving for the Aggies is 6-foot-8 redshirt freshman Duncan Powell. Powell is the reigning two-time CAA rookie of the week after winning the honor again on Monday.
  • In conference play, Powell is averaging 15.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game on 20-for-36 shooting (.556) from the field. Powell has eclipsed his career high in scoring in three of his last four games, including his 20-point outing against Charleston on Jan. 4.
  • Different players continue to offer significant contributions for the Aggies each game. Powell came off the bench to score 17 points and grab seven rebounds at Northeastern on Dec. 31. Tyrese Elliott came off the bench at Hofstra to score a career-high 12 points, including the game-winning tip-in at the buzzer in the Aggies 81-79 victory.
  • Powell had his first double-double in the same game with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Powell came off the bench against Charleston to score a career-high 20 points. Kyle Duke had eight points off the bench on 4-for-4 shooting.
  • Against UNCW, Love Bettis became the newest bench player to emerge as he finished with 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting for his fourth game, scoring in double figures on the season.
  • A&T did see the return of 6-foot-9 Austin Johnson, who missed the previous five games with an ankle injury. Johnson, who started the team's first 11 games, did come off the bench against UNCW.
  • Phillip Shumpert is the Aggies head coach on an interim basis. He took over the program for Will Jones in August. He missed three games with COVID but returned to earn the big win over UNCG.
  • Shumpert has been a significant part in helping the Aggies recruit some of their talent.
  • Shumpert took over on an interim basis in August. Shumpert has coached on many levels, including high school, Division II, junior college and Division I, and has head coaching experience on the junior college level for five years.

 SCOUTING THE ELON PHOENIX

  • Elon seeks its first conference win of the season as they welcome its Piedmont neighbors to Alamance County. Elon is also trying to snap a six-game losing streak that started on Dec. 15 at Presbyterian.
  • The Phoenix is also coming off a loss to UNCW, even though the loss came a week ago when the Seahawks defeated the Phoenix at the Schar Center, 81-66.
  • Zac Ervin led the Phoenix against UNCW on Jan. 4 with 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Torrence Watson came off the bench to score 14 points and grab eight rebounds on 5-for-9 shooting. Sean Halloran added 13 points against the Seahawks.
  • The Seahawks outrebounded the Phoenix 40-25. Elon has had trouble rebounding the basketball during the 2022-23 season. Elon has a minus-4.8 rebounding margin.
  • Halloran leads the Phoenix in scoring at 13.3 points per game. Halloran also shoots an impressive 93.2 percent (41-for-44) from the free throw line.
  • Halloran ranks fourth in the CAA in assists per game (4.3) and second in steals per game (2.4). He has scored in double figures in 11 straight games.
  • The lead man from the outside is Ervin, who has made a team-leading 37 3-pointers. Ervin has made 34.6 percent of those 3-pointers. Ervin is also averaging 11.1 points per game.
  •  CAA coaches selected Elon to finish 12th out of the 13 teams in the CAA. The Phoenix is coming off a 10-22 season in which it went 7-11 in the conference.
  • Billy Taylor leads the Phoenix in his first season. He comes to Elon after spending three seasons as an assistant at the University of Iowa.
  • During his time at Iowa, the Hawkeyes had two-time national player of the year Luke Garza along with Keegan Murray, a finalist for the Wooden Award and Naismith Trophy.
  • Taylor has made head coaching stops at Lehigh, Ball State and Belmont Abbey. A two-time Patriot League coach of the year, Taylor led Lehigh to the NCAA tournament in 2004. He has a 216-224 (.491) career record.

 THE SERIES

  • The Aggies and the Phoenix will meet for the 14th time, but for the first time since Nov. 16, 2001, when the Phoenix defeated the Aggies 94-82 in overtime at Alumni Gym in Elon.
  • The Aggies lead the series, 9-4, and they are 4-2 at Elon.
