The Aggies had an outstanding season-opening crowd on Saturday with 14,116.
The Aggies season opener came late this season. The last time the Aggies home opener was this late in the season was 2004, when the Aggies opened at home against Elon.
Despite coming home for the first in late September, Aggie fans will have many more opportunities to see the Aggies. Five of A&T's final seven games are at home. Six of their last seven games are in North Carolina.
A&T has now defeated S.C. State seven straight times. It is the longest winning streak the Aggies have ever had against the Bulldogs in the 57-game series.
Saturday's game against the Bulldogs lasted four hours and 13 minutes and included 32 incomplete passes.
The Aggies, who have won four HBCU national titles since 2015, defeated the reigning HBCU national champs in S.C. State.
Saturday marked only the sixth time the Aggies have scored 40 or more points in a game against the Bulldogs. The last time the Aggies scored 40-plus points against the Bulldogs came on Nov. 18, 2000, in a 66-14 win in Charlotte.
The Aggies captains on Saturday were left guard Dacquari Wilson, wide receiver Jamison Warren, defensive Daniel Henry and Karfa Kaba.
The last Bulldogs win in East Greensboro came on Nov. 20, 2010, when the Bulldogs defeated the Aggies 48-3.
The Aggies are now 3-1 against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) teams since leaving the league 2 ½ years ago.
The Aggies improved 12-4 at home under head coach Sam Washington. A&T is now 21-1 under Washington when leading at halftime.
Two former A&T football players were inducted into the A&T Sports Hall of Fame over the weekend in cornerback Dale Adair (1991-96) and linebacker Tim Johnson (1994-95).
OFFENSE
Bhayshul Tuten had another 100-yard rushing performance as he ran for 140 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. The last time an Aggie had three straight 100-yard rushing games came in 2019 when Jah-Maine Martin did it against Bethune-Cookman, N.C. Central and Alcorn State in A&T's final three games of the season.
Tuten had a big night. He had a career-high rushing performance and a career-best 172 all-purpose yards on 15 touches with three touchdowns. In addition, he had three receptions for 32 yards and a touchdown, and two touchdowns on the ground.
A&T played four quarterbacks on Saturday. Freshman Zachary Yeager started the game before leaving with an injury. Freshman Eli Brickhandler followed before graduate Jalen Fowler entered to play most of the game, throwing for 121 yards and two touchdowns on 8-for-14 passing. Freshman Alston Hooker entered the game late. Head coach Sam Washington said it is his first time seeing four quarterbacks play in one game for one team.
The Aggies rushed for a season-high 284 yards. The Aggies also had a season-high 439 yards of offense.
Tuten leads the Big South in rushing, averaging 105.0 yards per game. Fellow running back Wesley Graves rushed for a career-high 72 yards and a touchdown.
The Aggies had one rushing touchdown in three games coming into the game. However, they came away with three rushing touchdowns in one game.
DEFENSE
The Aggies did it again. The Aggies held S.C. State to 12 yards rushing. It marks the 57th time in the past 12 seasons the Aggies have held an opponent to under 12 yards rushing. In addition, it is the 71st time over that span the Aggies have held a team under 100 yards rushing.
Saturday marked the fifth time since 2019 that the Aggies have held an opponent under 30 yards rushing.
Forty-nine pass attempts are the most the Aggies have faced since Florida A&M threw it 54 times in a 22-21 win over the Aggies on October 13, 2018.
The Aggies continue to have the No. 1 total defense and the No. 1 rush defense in the conference. The Aggies have had their conference's No. 1 total defense five times since 2015. In addition, they have never ranked less than third in total defense in their conference.
Freshman Avarion Cole had an interception for the second time in as many games. His two INT returns this season have gone for 43 yards.
Sophomore Tyquan King had 10 tackles and continues to lead the Big South in total tackles with 44.
Devin Harrell had two sacks in the game. He now has 13 career sacks.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Sophomore Andrew Brown did miss his first field goal of the season, a 53-yarder. Had he connected, it would have been a school record. However, Brown did hit two field goals, both from 40-plus yards. He is now 7-for-8 on the season, with five field goals from 40-plus yards out.
A&T punt returner Amonte Jones did have an 89-yard punt return for a touchdown, but it was called back for a block in the back.
The Aggies did force a missed extra point during the game.
