HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Playing in its first road Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) volleyball match, North Carolina A&T lost in straight sets to Hofstra (25-14, 19, 17) Saturday at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.
Sophomore Naiya Sawtelle (Stuart, Fla.) recorded 11 kills and two blocks, and senior Addy Warfield (Winter Springs, Fla.) led the team with 13 assists and added five digs. Junior Morgan Allen (Charlotte, N.C.) led the team with 11 digs.
The Aggies took an early 4-3 lead in the opening set, but Hofstra outscored the Aggies 9-2 to take a 12-6 lead. A&T stayed within striking distance as Sawtelle scored on a kill from Warfield. But the Pride scored four straight to reclaim control of the set at 20-11.
After a block assist from Maya Johnson (Austin, Texas) and Sawtelle made it 21-13, the Pride earned set point thanks to a 3-0 run. After a Hannah Howell kill, the set ended on an Aggies service error.
A 5-0 Aggies run in the second set led to an 8-6 lead. Unfortunately, the Pride answered with a 7-0 run to take a 13-8 advantage. The Aggies would work their way to within two, however, as a Sawtelle kill and a block assist from Sawtelle and freshman Chiara Napoli (Saint-Raphael, France) cut Hofstra's lead to 20-18. But the Pride ended the second on a 5-1 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Hofstra never trailed in the third set, despite the Aggies putting together their best hitting percentage (.208) of the match. A solo block by Jada Hampton (Joliet, Ill.) did get the Aggies to within four, 17-13, but Hofstra ran off five straight points to take a 22-13 lead.
Senior Mallory Porcher had a kill and teamed with Howell during a 3-1 A&T spurt to make it 23-16, but Izadora Stedile gave Hofstra set point. After a Sawtelle kill, Sarah Pierre won the match for the Pride with a kill.
Stedile led Hofstra with a match-high 13 kills and recorded a .450 hitting percentage.
