HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Freshman Chiara Napoli (Saint-Raphael, France) secured her fourth double-double of the season, but the Hofstra Pride still held on for a 3-1 win (20-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-19) over the Aggies Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.
Napoli led the team with 24 assists and 12 digs. She also recorded three blocks and three kills on five swings with an error for a .400 hitting percentage.
A&T compiled a .268 hitting percentage to win the first set. Hofstra began the first set with a 12-11 lead, but the Aggies scored the next six points, including two Sawtelle kills, back-to-back Spoormakers service aces, a Napoli kill, and a Napoli and Porcher block for a 17-12 lead.
The Pride worked to cut the lead to 20-19 before a Hannah Howell (St. Louis Park, Minn.) kill, a Naiya Sawtelle (Stuart, Fla.) kill and a Hofstra attack error forced the Pride to call timeout. After the timeout, Spoormakers gave the Aggies set point with a kill. Then, after an Aggies attack error, A&T scored 1-0 in the match on a Sawtelle kill.
After a Sawtelle kill moved the Aggies to within one, 17-16, in the second set. Hofstra ended the second on an 8-1 spurt to even the match at 1.
Hofstra forced an A&T timeout in the third set after Emily Nunes and Beatriz Alves teamed for a block of a Sawtelle attack. After the timeout, a Spoormakers kill and a Sawtelle and Porcher block cut the lead to 16-13. But Hofstra outscored the Aggies 4-1 from there to take a 20-14 lead. After Porcher made it a 21-16 match with a kill, Hofstra ran off three straight to take a 24-17 lead and took a 2-1 lead in the match on a Sarah Pierre kill.
Zyare Abdul-Rahim took steps toward helping the Pride end the match as her kill gave Hofstra a 20-13 lead in the fourth. But A&T stood firm. Two Howell kills and a shared block with Maya Johnson were a part of a 5-1 Aggies run to cut the Pride's lead to three, 21-18.
But the Pride responded with a 4-1 run to end the match and improve to 7-8 overall and 4-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Aggies are 4-10 overall and 0-4 in CAA play.
Abdul-Rahim led Hofstra with 15 kills. Sawtelle recorded a match-high 18 kills and added five digs and two blocks. Howell added 16 kills and four digs with a .333 hitting percentage.
