Pitt Gets Series-Opening Win Over A&T

The two teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.

Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. – A career performance on the mound from Matt Gilbertson (W, 7-2) carried the Pittsburgh Panthers to a 10-0 win over the North Carolina A&T Aggies on Friday night in a non-conference baseball bout under the lights of Charles L. Cost Field.

The win improves Pitt to 23-16 while the Aggies fall to 12-28.

In an eight-inning, mercy rule affair, Gilbertson through a complete game, going eight innings and allowing just two hits with 12 strikeouts. He also did not walk a single batter in the game.

He got plenty of help from his offense to ensure the win.

The Panther bats broke the scoring open in the bottom of the second inning, plating three runs on two hits.

Bryce Hulett led off the frame with a solo home run. The next three batters all drew walks to load the bases, and after a strikeout, Jeffrey Wehler lined a single to left field that scored two more runs as Pitt jumped out to a 3-0 advantage.

Junior left-hander Peyton Winebarger (L, 2-6) got the start on the mound for the Aggies and provided six innings of work, giving up four runs and walking six. However, Winebarger did strike out five, giving him a team-leading 59 on the campaign.

The Panthers led 5-0 heading into the home eighth and scored five runs to put the mercy rule in action.

With the bases loaded, Ron Washington, Jr. and Hulett both drew RBI walks to make it 7-0. Freshman RHP Bryson Galloway entered in relief and walked Jack Anderson. After junior RHP Jeremiah Foster came in, Tommy Tavarez sliced a two-RBI single to left center, scoring the ninth and 10th runs to end the contest.

Washington, Jr. and Wehler tallied two hits to lead the Panthers, while Hulett led with three RBI. Anderson and Tavarez each drew three walks.

Sophomore Camden Jackson and junior Bret Mersman had a hit apiece for the Aggies.

Due to expected inclement weather on Sunday, the teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday in an effort to finish out the three-game series in Pittsburgh.
