ATLANTA, Ga. – North Carolina A&T women's golf finished the day in second place. Senior Christyn Carr is tied for first place after the first day of the Women's Collegiate Championship at the par 72, 6,104-yard Eagle's Landing Country Club Tuesday.
Delaware State leads the tournament with a 23-over 311, followed by the Aggies, who fired off a 29-over 317. Texas Southern is in third at 39-over 327.
Meanwhile, Carr carded 3-over 75 to finish in the first-place tie with Delaware State's Jirada Kluaymaingarm. There is a four-way tie for third place, including A&T freshman Vileska Gelpi, who shot a 6-over 78.
After starting the day with a double bogey, Carr birdied the 416-yard, par-4 third hole and the 464-yard par-5 sixth hole to move to even par. She finished the front nine with a bogey and made the turn at 1-over.
Carr triple-bogeyed the 11th hole on the back nine and bogeyed the 12th hole. She recovered nicely, however. Carr posted a red number with a birdie on the par-5, 453-yard 13th. She had another birdie on the par-5, 460-yard 18th, to shoot 2-over on the back nine.
Carr shot 3-under on the course's four par-5s to keep pace with Kluaymaingarm.
Gelpi struggled on the front nine, carding two bogeys and a double bogey. She did, however, post a two on the par-3, 140-yard fourth to finish the front nine at 5-over. But Gelpi would bounce back on the back nine. After parring the 10th, she birdied the 11th, a 168-yard par-3.
She parred the next three holes before running into trouble again on holes 15-17. She bogeyed on three holes to move to 7-over. But she ended her round with a birdie on 18 to finish the back nine at 1-over. Gelpi shot 1-under on the course's four par 3s.
Graduate Isabela Miravite is in a tie for eighth place after shooting an 8-over 80. The eight strokes over par all came on the front nine. Miravite had a magnificent back nine.
She carded pars on the first five holes before breaking the streak with a bogey on the 15th. Then, after two more pars, she birdied the 18th to finish the back nine at even par.
Junior Jayla Rogers finished the day in a tie for 17th after an 84 in the first round. Senior Xuss Boira finished tied for 25th place with an 87.
