EAST GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T baseball team dropped their Saturday contest against the Campbell Fighting Camels, 17-1, in Big South Conference play at World War Memorial Stadium.
A&T (12-22, 1-11) got off to its best start of the weekend, retiring the Camels (22-12, 11-1) in the top of the first thanks to a 5-4-3 double play and a strikeout from junior left-hander Peyton Winebarger (L, 2-4).
Junior Cameran Brantley started things off with a bang, taking the first pitch of the home half over the right field wall, his fourth home run of the season and second of the series, to put the Aggies up 1-0 early.
Juniors Anthony Hennings and Cort Maynard both followed with singles. Maynard later stole second to put runners in scoring position with no one out.
Unfortunately, the Aggies mustered just one hit for the remainder of the game, while the Camels did the opposite.
They got things going in a hurry offensively. But unfortunately, A&T did not help themselves with five errors. Two of those came in the top of the second, allowing three unearned Campbell runs to cross the plate.
In the fourth inning, with runners on second and third, Drew Winters flew out to TJ Ash in center field for what should have been the final out of the inning. It wasn't, however, as the ball bounced out of Ash's glove, allowing both runners to score two more unearned runs.
Eight of the Camels' 17 runs on Saturday were unearned.
The fifth featured a solo home run from Connor Denning, the first of two on the day, to put Campbell up 6-1. The Camels led 9-1 going into their ninth, where they plated eight more runs. Jordan Belbin got things going with a two-run triple down the right field line to make it 11-1. It marked the eighth straight game Campbell scored double-figure runs.
Then Denning homered over the right center wall to bring home three more, and before Ty Babin capped it off with a two-run shot of his own.
