Patmon's Walk-Off Homer Leads A&T to Game 2 Win

The Aggies split a doubleheader against Western Carolina on Wednesday.

EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T split a softball doubleheader against the Western Carolina Catamounts Wednesday, losing the first game 6-3 and winning the second 6-5 in eight innings at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex. In the eighth inning, Freshman Dezianna Patmon hit a walk-off home run to win Game 2.

"This team has been working their tail off," A&T coach Patti Raduenz said. "We haven't had things go our way. I'm happy for the players. They worked their tails off and kept having a positive attitude. Kept having each other's back."

A&T led 4-2 in Game 2 going into the seventh with freshman Mariah Headen in the circle. Headen retired the first two Catamounts she faced before Brooklyn Brewington. Natalie Henry made it sting even worse when she hit a two-run home run on a 1-1 pitch to tie the game at 4.

The Aggies reached third with one out in the seventh but stranded the runner there.

With the international tiebreaker rule, Western Carolina started the visitor's eighth with Bailey Treadway at second base. After a walk and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases with no outs, Samantha Reele hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left field to score Treadway for a 5-4 Catamount advantage.

But Western Carolina did not do any more damage as Headen retired the next two batters to send the game into the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Kendall Macauley started the inning on second base before graduate Jazzmaine Hammond moved her to third on a bunt sacrifice.

That setup Patmon's Game 2 heroics as her swing powered the ball over the left field fence.

"We had speed, and Jazzmaine was up to bat," Patmon said. "I knew that she was going to move the runner. I knew I had to put the ball in the outfield and hit it hard to score Macauley. She pitched the ball right over the plate, and I swung at it. Luckily it went it out."

Game 2 started with Western Carolina scoring a run in the first before the Aggies responded with two runs in the bottom half.

The rally started with Macauley doubling to right center, followed by Hammond moving her to third on a sac bunt. One batter later, freshman Icess Tresvik hit her 10th home run, a two-run blast over the center field fence.

The Catamounts tied the game at 2 in the third inning after Bailey Huneycutt recorded her second RBI single of the game.

A&T recaptured the lead in the sixth inning. Macauley started with a single through the left side, and Hammond reached on a bunt single. Patmon moved the runners into scoring position on a sac bunt to set up Tresvik's RBI sac fly to score Macauley.

Sophomore Alyxx Estrada then hit an infield single to drive home Hammond for a 4-2 Aggies lead before the fireworks of the late innings.

"To see them fight through that extra innings, bases loaded, and only allow that one run to score means we held tough defensively and offensively came through and finished the day," said Raduenz.

Tresvik went 2-for-2 with a run scored and three RBI. Macauley went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
Headen (1-3) picked up her first career collegiate win, giving up three earned runs, seven hits and striking out four in eight innings pitched.

In the first game, Western Carolina scored two runs in the first without recording a hit. However, A&T quickly responded in their half of the first as Macauley hit a triple to right on the first pitch she saw. Estrada grounded out to second to score Macauley. One batter later, Tresvik hit a two-out line-drive homer to left to tie the game at 2.

However, Western Carolina broke through in the fourth by scoring four runs to take a 6-2 lead. A&T scored in the fifth on a Macauley RBI single, but it would not be enough.

Macauley went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Tresvik went 2-for-3 with one run scored and an RBI, and Hammond went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

S'Nyiah Stinson (2-6) picked up the loss in the circle after pitching the first four innings giving up five earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore Kayla Douglas pitched the final three shutout innings scattering one hit with two strikeouts.

Tresvik was a combined 4-for-5 with two home runs, two runs scored and four RBI.

"I had a lot of adjustments to make," Tresvik said. "I realized that I was pulling my shoulder way too much. I made some small adjustments today to see if it would help me, and it did. I am glad that Dezianna hit that home run because I was getting a little nervous."
