LAST MEETING:Â These teams last met on April 12, 2015, a 6-2 loss for A&T that clinched a weekend series victory for the Lancers, 2-1.Â
WHO'S HOT: Junior infielder Anthony Hennings has been a staple offensively for A&T. He is second in the Big South in batting (.387) and is coming off a 2-for-4 two-double, two-RBI game against Power Five opponent N.C. State. Hennings also picked up his first home run last weekend against Canisius. He leads the team with 10 multi-hit games.Â
AGGIES OVERVIEW:Â The Aggies are coming off a 5-3 midweek defeat at the hands of ACC opponent N.C. State on Tuesday.Â
A&T returns home this weekend to #TheWar, where they have won all nine of their games this season. They have found the majority of their success in weekend series games. They are 7-2 over their last nine and have outscored their opponents 67-34.Â
The hitters have shined in those games, posting eight or more runs in four of the contest. The Aggies have two players hitting .300 or better in Hennings and Bussey and are third in the Big South in team batting average (.272).Â
Pitching has been a plus for A&T too. The Aggies sit atop the conference in ERA (4.07). They have seven throwers with a sub-5.00 ERA and four with 20-plus strikeouts.Â
Head coach Ben Hall is now in his eighth year at A&T and has a 150-203 (.425) record.Â
LANCERS OVERVIEW:Â Â The Lancers dropped a midweek contest against the VCU Rams on Tuesday, 6-5. The loss drops Longwood to 0-7 on the road.Â
In the preseason poll, Big South head coaches voted the Lancers to finish 11th in the league. They were the only team picked to finish below A&T.Â
Longwood is second in the Big South in batting average (.293), just .001 behind leader USC Upstate. This year, they have scored a league-best 167 runs, notching a single-game league-high 24 runs twice this season (3/9 vs. Saint Peters; 3/15 vs. Norfolk State).Â
Redshirt junior first baseman Hunter Gilliam leads the league in home runs (7) and RBI (23) and is batting .288 for the Lancers this season. However, he has just six hits in his last 25 at-bats and had not hit a home run since March 6 before breaking that streak on Sunday against UNC Asheville.Â
The Lancers have not gotten quite the same production from their pitching staff that sits sixth in the conference in ERA (5.90). They have allowed eight-or-more runs seven times this year, including a season-worst 19 against N.C. State on Feb. 23.Â
Longwood's arms are led by sophomore right-hander Logan Berrier, who sports a 2.57 ERA in 14 innings pitched. Fellow redshirt sophomore RHP Andrew Potojecki sports a team-best 22 strikeouts.Â
Chad Oxendine is in his first year as the baseball head coach at Longwood after a three-year stint as a Director of Baseball Operations and Player Development at Coastal Carolina (2018-2021).Â
QUOTABLE:Â "Big moment in our program as we open up Big South play this weekend. I'm excited to see our guys come out and focus on one game at a time and play clean, complementary baseball. Longwood has done some good things this year and is up at the top of the league, statistically. It should be a great test, and we look forward to seeing Aggie Nation out there loud to start a new era in league play."Â
News & Notes:Â
- A&T is 3-7 over their last 10 games vs. Longwood.Â
- The Lancers are 0-10 in North Carolina this year.Â
- Maynard has reached base safely in seven straight games.Â
- A&T is an extremely young team, with 27 of their 38 (.711) rostered players being underclassmen.Â
- Longwood assistant coach Brad Mincey spent the last two seasons at A&T's archrival North Carolina Central before the Eagles discontinued their program. Mincey worked with the pitching staff that finished top two in the MEAC for ERA in back-to-back seasons (2020-21).Â
