LAST MEETING:Â These teams will compete against one another for the first time this weekend.
Â
WHO'S HOT: Cort Maynard is hitting .500 over his last six games, spreading 10 hits across 20 at-bats. Of those 10 knocks, four are doubles, and three are home runs. In addition, he has six RBI and a staggering 1.150 slugging percentage in that span.Â
Â
AGGIES OVERVIEW:Â The Aggies are coming off their second straight midweek win, a 4-2 triumph over the Appalachian State Mountaineers. A&T moves to 5-0 on the year when they score in the first inning.Â
Â
The Aggies lost tons of pitching during the offseason, but the pitching staff has been the team's strength. The Aggies have seven pitchers with a sub-5.00 ERA and lead the Big South in ERA (4.11). In addition, opposing batters are hitting just .253 against A&T's staff.Â
Offensively, the Aggies are third in the conference in batting average (.273). Their 34 doubles rank second-best in the league.Â
Â
A&T also has two players with a .350-plus batting average. In addition, they have five double-digit hitting games, four of those coming in weekend series.Â
Â
Coach Hall is now in his eighth year at A&T and has an overall 148-199 (.422) record.Â
Â
GOLDEN GRIFFINS OVERVIEW:Â Â The Golden Griffins are riding the momentum of a three-game weekend series sweep against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. That included overcoming an 11-run deficit in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.Â
Â
The preseason coaches poll predicted Canisius to finish third in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). They had three players named to the league's preseason team – first baseman Vinny Chiarenza, utility player Max Grant and outfielder Carlin Dick.Â
Â
Grant, the reigning MAAC rookie of the year, is batting a scorching .483 with three home runs and 10 RBI in 15 games this season. Chiarenza and Dick, however, are struggling to begin the year, with both batting below .225. Graduate utility player Mike Steffan leads the team with his three homers and 16 RBI.Â
Â
The Golden Griffins pitching staff sports four players with a sub-5.00 ERA, led by freshman RHP Peyton Consigli's 1.74 ERA in 10.1 innings pitched. Sophomore RHP Matt Duffy leads with a team-high 32 RBI.Â
Â
Head coach Matt Mazurek is in his fifth year as head coach and 16th overall with Canisius. Before taking over, he spent 10 seasons as an assistant and two years as a student-athlete for the Golden Griffins. As a player, he was a career .355 hitter and earned male athlete of the year in 2006. He has an overall record of 89-84-1.Â
Â
QUOTABLE:Â "Great challenge coming in this weekend in Canisius. They have played a tough schedule, and they are a program that has a reputation for playing tough series. We're looking for our team to show continued growth and come out with the collective focus it takes to play complementary baseball. Our concentration is on having a great day of prep today and going 1-0 Friday."Â
