WHY A&T DID NOT GET THE W: The Big Three. The Aggies had a hard time getting their Big Three going on Tuesday. Leading scorer Chanin Scott only had one shot attempt going into the fourth quarter. Second-leading scorer and center Jazmin Harris started the game just 2-for-9 from the floor. Point guard and sharpshooter Shareka McNeill got into early foul trouble and, therefore, also got off to a slow start.
WHY CAMPBELL DID THE W: Foul trouble. Campbell leading scorer and rebounder Taya Bolden, picked up her third foul early in the third quarter and had to exit the game. The Aggies used her absence to cut a 13-point lead to three. She picked up her fourth foul late in the third quarter, with the Camels ahead by just five. But this time, when she returned, Camels star point guard Luana Serranho and a group of role players had built a 16-point fourth-quarter lead with five minutes to play.
CRUCIAL: With the Aggies trailing 38-34 with 41 seconds left, An Audrey Fuller baseline 3-pointer with 11 seconds left in the third quarter to give the Camels much-needed momentum heading into the fourth quarter.
EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T's quest to reach the top of the Big South Conference standings in women's basketball took a major blow on Tuesday night at Corbett Sports Center as the Campbell Fighting Camels defeated the Aggies 56-48.
Campbell (17-5, 11-2 Big South) came into the game as the Big South Conference leader. The Aggies (10-12, 7-5 Big South) trailed the Camels by 2 ½ games coming in and earned a victory over the Camels in Buies Creek, N.C., last week. The Aggies, however, will now need some help if they want to ascend to the top after losing their second straight home game.
A&T could also not avoid getting off to its second straight slow start at home. The Aggies trailed High Point University 12-1 over the first five minutes of last Wednesday's game at Corbett. On Tuesday, the Aggies shot just 2-for-14 from the field in the first quarter and trailed 11-4 after the first stanza.
Campbell, who also had its struggles offensively in the first quarter, got going in the second as Shy Tuelle hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Camels a 17-8 lead. Tuelle's threes were a part of a 10-2 run that gave the Camels a 21-8 lead with 6:07 remaining in the first half.
The Aggies went the final 2:52 of the first half without a score from the field. Camels leading scorer Taya Bolden scored on a jump shot with 1:43 remaining in the first half, it gave Campbell a 32-15 lead at halftime.
But Bolden picked up her third foul with 8:33 remaining in the third quarter, with the Camels leading 32-19. The Aggies took full advantage of her absence. After two Jazmin Harris converted two free throws, point guard Shareka McNeill swooped to the basket for a layup to cut the Campbell's lead to nine.
Svenia Nurenberg answered for Campbell with a transition layup to give Campbell a 34-23 lead. The Aggies kept rolling, however. They went on a 10-2 run fueled by a 3-point play and 3-pointer from Jordyn Dorsey. The run pulled A&T to within three at 36-33 with 1:14 remaining in the third.
Bolden returned to the Camels lineup and was set up by Micalia Coleman for a layup to put Campbell ahead by five with 52 seconds remaining in the third. But 11 seconds later, referees called Bolden for her fourth foul, sending Bolden back to the Campbell sideline.
Harris hit one free throw to cut the Camels lead to four. But Audrey Fuller appeared to ignite the Camels as she hit a baseline 3-pointer to conclude the period, giving Campbell a 41-34 lead.
Campbell's momentum carried over into the fourth quarter as they scored the first seven points of the period to take a 48-34 advantage, leading to an Aggies timeout. The Camels lead eventually grew to 53-37, their largest of the second half, with only 4 ½ minutes remaining.
There was a response from the Aggies. A&T scored nine straight points capped off by McNeill finding Harris inside for a layup to cut Campbell's lead to 53-46. The Aggies had a chance to get to within four with a minute left as McNeill got loose for an open 3-point look, but it rimmed out, all but ending the Aggies hopes of a rally.
QUOTABLE: "This was the most disappointing loss of the season for me.
We had another opportunity to try and position ourselves, and we couldn't rise to the occasion. I take full responsibility for it. Campbell came in and understood what this game meant. I've got to do a better job of sending that same message to my team."
