NORTH CAROLINA A&T AGGIES (12-12, 9-5 Big South): The Aggies are coming off back-to-back wins against Presbyterian College. They beat the Blue Hose 80-52 in Greensboro on Thursday at Corbett Sports Center before defeating PC again 73-56 Saturday afternoon in Clinton, S.C. A&T is looking to avenge their 76-45 loss in their Big South opener against Longwood in Corbett as the Aggies played without their top three scorers.
In the Saturday game, Graduate forward Chain Scott led the Aggies with 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. Graduate center
Jazmin Harris added 12 points and four rebounds, and junior forward
Shayla Nelson had 10 points. Harris had 23 points and seven boards Thursday night, and Scott added 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals.
In the December meeting,
Kiana Adderton led the team with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Nelson added nine points and seven rebounds.
Head coach
Tarrell Robinson is in his 10th season as the head coach of A&T. He is 187-105 (.640) overall and 118-34 (.776) in conference games. Robinson needs five wins to become the program's all-time winningest coach, passing Tim Abney on the list. Robinson has won four Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) regular-season titles and three conference tournament titles.
LONGWOOD LANCERS (13-11, 10-3 Big South): Longwood bounced back with a 78-56 win over Winthrop on Saturday after losing to Big South leader Campbell, 58-45 the previous Saturday.
Kyla McMakin is the second-leading scorer in the conference at 18.6 points per game. Akila Smith is fifth in the league in scoring (16.1), fourth in rebounding (7.5), and she leads the league in field goal percentage (.580) and blocked shots (2.9). The third member of Longwood's big trio, Tra'dayja Smith, leads the Big South in assists (5.1), and she is the second-leading free throw shooter (.847).
In the December meeting, McMakin led the team with 29 points. Akila Smith had 22 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks. Tra'dayja Smith added eight assists.
Rebecca Tillett is in her fourth season as the head coach at Longwood. During her first season at Longwood in 2018-19, the Lancers went 3-27 overall and 2-16 in the Big South. By her third season, the Lancers were 14-11 and 12-6 in conference play. This season they have been near the top of the conference standings throughout.
THE SERIES: Before the 76-45 loss in the Big South opener on December 29, the only other meeting between A&T and Longwood occurred on November 25, 2006. The Aggies won that matchup 79-63 in Corbett. The two teams will play for the first time in Farmville, Va.
QUOTABLE: "The last time we played them, we were outmatched. It will be good to see how we measure up to them with everyone healthy and available. They are where we want to be in the Big South standings, so this will be a game of major importance to both teams."
GAME NOTES:
- In their last two games, the Aggies have shot better than 50 percent from the floor. The last time the Aggies shot 50 percent from the floor in two straight games occurred during the 2010-11 season when they did it against Norfolk State and Howard on March 3 and 10. The last time the Aggies shot 50 percent from the floor in three straight games was the 2008-09 season when they did it against Morgan State, Coppin State and Maryland Eastern Shore, January 10-17.
- The Aggies have won five straight on the road. Their last road loss occurred on January 15 at USC Upstate.
- Head coach Tarrell Robinson is 13 wins away from 200 A&T coaching victories. It would make him only the third coach – men's or women's basketball – to record 200 A&T wins. He would join Don Corbett and Cal Irvin.
- The Aggies are tied for the league lead in field goal percentage in conference games only. They are shooting 45.6 percent over 14 conference games played.
- The Aggies do hold the largest rebounding margin in league games only. They are outrebounding their opponents by 3.6 boards per game.
- The Aggies have won three weekly honors this season. Point guard Shareka McNeill owns two of those honors, earning Big South player of the week twice (December 23, January 31). Scott was named co-Big South player of the week on February 7.
- Scott shoots 62.9 percent from the floor in league games only, which leads the league. Longwood's Akila Smith is second, shooting 62.6 percent from the floor.
