EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T linebacker Jacob Roberts (Charlotte, N.C.) has become a scoring threat lately.
For the second straight week, Roberts returned an interception for a touchdown. His most recent pick-6 aided in him winning Big South Conference defensive player of the week, the conference announced on Monday.
Two weeks ago, at the Greatest Homecoming on Earth, Roberts' pick-6 engineered an Aggies second-half rally that led A&T to a 45-38 win over the Campbell Fighting Camels. Last week, his interception return for a touchdown gave the Aggies a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. The Aggies eventually beat fellow HBCU Norfolk State 49-24 at Truist Stadium.
"He is a special young man on the field and off it," said A&T head coach Sam Washington. "He is a very smart, conscientious, good person. The same high quality he plays with on the field; that's how he lives his life daily. He's a quality guy. I hope the importance of caring for your body, mind and soul rubs off on our guys."
Along with his pick-6, Roberts also made 12 tackles, including nine solo tackles and a tackle for loss. He also broke up a pass. Roberts has seven career double-figure tackle games.
Roberts has recorded 55 tackles, including 30 unassisted and four for loss. He also has two interceptions, six passes defenses, four quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and two blocked kicks this season.
Monday marked his second career Big South weekly defensive honor after earning the recognition on Nov. 8, 2021. In addition, the Aggies have won two weekly defensive honors from the conference after Karon Prunty's two-interception game against Bryant earned him the honor on Oct. 3. The Aggies have seven total Big South weekly honors on the season.
Roberts and the Aggies will play their home finale, noon Saturday at Truist Stadium against Charleston Southern.
